This months pay checks of Zero amount are starting to be sent today. Air traffic controllers are either getting no pay, or being furloughed
More than 24,000 FAA employees are working without pay, since their positions are considered vital for “life and safety.” Another more than 17,000 have been furloughed, told to stop doing their jobs, including the vital training work needed to bring much-needed additional air traffic controllers into the workforce after years of retirements have thinned the ranks.

I genuinely fear for the safety of people if this continues and training of staff and maintenance of systems etc is compromised. I somehow doubt Trump feels the same though and he will have a go at the staff for failing to maintain his personal achievement of fewest ever accidents in aviation ever. If you had put all of his actions as president into a film 5 years ago no one would watch it as it would be completely unbelievable.
I'd have to say if I was one of say the FBI agents protecting the government officials and not being paid I'd just not turn up. If the people with the power to do something about it don't do anything then they can deal with the consequences. Although I guess since it's America you'd lose your job or something stupid like that. It'd be a bit different perhaps if it was a job others really rely on you like say care homes etc.

Now that is an episode of "Criminal Minds" I think I'd be interested to watch... where Hotch and the team are all furloughed and instead of solving mass murders and child abductions, spend their time doing tedious household admin and spending time with their families.. _dobbo_ said:
Interesting letter from a structural engineer / "wall expert" on all the ways the "wall" is terrible.
I always thought the wall idea was daft, technology is surely the answer, weaponised drones patrolling the border, as soon as it detects a heart source bigger than a coyote alert the authorities or shoot them depending on who is in the whitehouse.Vandenberg said:

Which is an even more daft idea. Not only will that end up with far more false positives than positive positives, Constitutionalist Americans will st kittens at the idea of the government operating an army inside US soil. The best solution is to simply make a tax number compulsory to employ anyone and enforce this on the employers (not the employees). But that will never happen as the people who talk out one side of their mouth about "illegals" are happy to pay Jesus to mow their lawns and Rosita to look after their kids wages that no USian would accept.
The US either needs to change itself, or just accept that it tolerates an underclass of undocumented workers because they're cheap.
Dont worry folks. The Donald has been to the border and see it for himself. Worse then anyone can imagine, and there is actually an invasion as well. Apparently the wall/barrier can solve all the issues, and stop everything cold.
With that kind of explanation, it would be crazy for old Crying Chuck to not approve the wall.
According to reports the more they use the words 'invasion', 'crisis' it backs up the legal standpoint for emergency funding.

Oh I would absolutely love that. Trump wandering about a deserted White House looking for his Secret Service minders. Might focus his small mind a little.
I loved the news today interviewing a farmer that is a victim of Trump's trade war and who is now also a victim of Trump's shutdown as the agency delegated to pay for his ummarketable crop is closed.
" I dont need a wall, I need my money." Says the unhappy farmer.
In any big squeeze between federal employees and Trump there is only going to be one winner and it won't be Trump. Once the effects of them not working start to hit home he'll have to retreat.
Meanwhile, I bet Trump is wondering where a modern-day Lee Harvey Oswald might be found and hired before Feb 7.

Note however that he doesn't actually say he got back from the border. Just that he just got back, whatever that means. Maybe his walnut-sized brain is finally working out that it's worth wording stuff in a defensible way, something he hasn't bothered to do up to now. EvoDelta said:
Someone should go back to earlier volumes of this thread and drag up all of the posts where Trumpettes said that the wall was not real, and more of a metaphor. I'm pretty sure there were quite a few of them.
Sadly most flounce, get banned or both. It is a shame, I miss croyft telling us there is no evidence of collusion and would like to see how long this position can be maintained by supporters of the cantaloupe cretin.Vandenberg said:

The bill has gone to Trump for his signature.
Amidst all the news that Mueller is about to drop his report, Trump kicks his phony wall "crisis" into overdrive. It's no big mystery, these two things are 100% linked.
The House voted to approve backpay for federal workers affected by the government shutdown 411-7, a day after the Senate unanimously passed the same resolution

The Senate is now adjourned until Monday so this will be the US's longest shutdown
The House also approved legislation that would fund and re-open the Interior Department, EPA and Forest Service in a 240-179 vote.
Ten Republicans joined Democrats in voting for the measure.

To be fair to trump, the wall and shutdown is providing a reasonable distraction from the trump investigation.
However: House Intel member Denny Heck: "The transmission of the polling data by Mr. Manafort, that's the textbook definition of collusion. This is no longer in doubt ... The next question, which is fair, is was criminal conspiracy conducted? And we don't yet know that. Yet."
