The Senate is now adjourned until Monday so this will be the US's longest shutdown

The House also approved legislation that would fund and re-open the Interior Department, EPA and Forest Service in a 240-179 vote.
Ten Republicans joined Democrats in voting for the measure.

Do those have to be signed by Trump?

What sort of arse votes against back pay for employees affected by the shutdown? Unbelievable, even in this administration.

They can bypass trump by voting it through Congress only Mich McConnell won't allow them to be put to them.

Lyndsey Graham just met with the President & his team to discuss the shutdown stalemate & the border wall.
Here's his public message following that meeting:

Lindsey Graham
@LindseyGrahamSC

Mr. President,

Declare a national emergency NOW.

Build a wall NOW.

What that really says is that Graham knows trump wont win, but wont tell him that, and knows that the decision will be challenged in the courts and the injunction will allow the government to be reopened...
So again the GOP won't stand upto trump

So that's it - you declare a national emergency to get what you want, so no complaints when the Dems win in 2020 and declare a national emergency to push through Medicare, will declare a national emergency after the next mass shooting, and then ban all guns.

I'm convinced that Trump has something on Graham. Can't wait to find out what it is!

But that's COMPLETELY different, wink Everyone knows more guns = more safety; it's just the gubberment wanting to control you. In this case there's millions and millions and millions and millions and millions and millions of illegals just waiting to storm the US and destroy the country.

More bad news for trump:

MICHAEL COHEN, President Trump's former fixer and personal attorney, will testify in PUBLIC before House Oversight on Feb. 7. Expect questions about his involvement in hush money scheme to silence Trump affairs, the Trump Tower Moscow project in 2016 and other controversies

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/10/us/politics/mic...

ON TV AND UNDER OATH! 7th Feb

“In furtherance of my commitment to cooperate and provide the American people with answers,” Mr. Cohen said in a statement, “I have accepted the invitation by Chairman Elijah Cummings to appear publicly on Feb. 7. I look forward to having the privilege of being afforded a platform with which to give a full and credible account of the events which have transpired.”
So this the the big one no?
1St time one of the big guilties gets to have their say in public.
There must be loads of nuggets that he can just drop in during the event. Nuggets that Muller may not be interested in, but that could swamp the orange one with gossip, new threads for investigative journalists to follow. Etc.

If Cohen drops an abortion bombshell, Trump may be on very thin ice.

He is going to need something big to distract from that!
Maybe he will try live-streaming him folding his washing in his underwear like stormy did hehehurl

The NBPC (The National Border Patrol Council (NBPC) is the exclusive representative of approximately 18,000 Border Patrol Agents and support personnel assigned to the U.S. Border Patrol. The U.S. Border Patrol falls under the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).) used to have a post in their FAQ explaining why walls don't / won't work:

It, and its archived webpage, were removed on 4th January this year.

....or if you could bring yourself to believe in a devious, calculating GOP (rather than the dim-witted, scared GOP), "let's keep pushing Trump to do stupid things, so that it makes it easier to disown him at a critical point later".

Granted this logic is flawed on so many levels, I don't really know why I suggested it :-).

The Simpsons episode this morning on C4 at 9.30 is the one where they build a wall to keep out Shelbyville immigrants.

On the day the shutdown becomes the longest in history.

Coincidence?

I think initially they thought trump gave them votes - which he does to an extent, but I think the trump investigation will come back to bite many GOP members, who will have taken money from the NRA etc as usual but got additional funding, or advertising paid for, than usual and this will turn out to be foreign, illegal money. I think many know this thats why they still support trump, hoping it wont ever come out.

We already know some GOP illegally coordinated adverts with the NRA
https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/424878-three...

Then there's those like McConnell, Nunes etc, who have gone so completely in, they either leave like Nunes, or double down like McConnell.

Either way, when it all finally comes out, I think the GOP is going to be heavily damaged by this

The NY Times are reporting that law enforcement officials were so concerned by Trump's actions after firing Comey that the FBI began investigating whether Trump was a Russian agent.

The inquiry carried explosive implications. Counterintelligence investigators had to consider whether the president’s own actions constituted a possible threat to national security. Agents also sought to determine whether Mr. Trump was knowingly working for Russia or had unwittingly fallen under Moscow’s influence.

Agents and senior F.B.I. officials had grown suspicious of Mr. Trump’s ties to Russia during the 2016 campaign but held off on opening an investigation into him, the people said, in part because they were uncertain how to proceed with an inquiry of such sensitivity and magnitude. But the president’s activities before and after Mr. Comey’s firing in May 2017, particularly two instances in which Mr. Trump tied the Comey dismissal to the Russia investigation, helped prompt the counterintelligence aspect of the inquiry.

This is where we have got to with the trump investigation. If we hadn't had every other scandal around trump, this would be major news.

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/11/us/politics/fbi...

FBI officials felt their decision to open a countelintel probe had been validated after Trump said this to visiting Russian officials in the Oval after Comey was fired: "I faced great pressure because of Russia. That’s taken off."

On the subject of others involvement, if/when Trump is indicted and he realises he can't use executive priveledge or pardons for himself and his family, he will sing like a canary and drop loads of others in the st, to save his skin. He's not a man to fall on his sword with dignity.

Whilst blaming a witch hunt, he did nothing wrong etc.
I can't wait to see Giuliani charged, how far can someone fall after 9/11. His leaks from the FBI NY agents had a direct impact on Comeys actions.

Will it really hurt them that much? I think the smarter GoP playrs have already bailed or have exit plans, Paul Ryan as an example, other big hitters are waiting in the wings. But of a tory situation here I think, Trump is the GoP's brexit, on which side will they fall. Brexit hasn't split the tory party, and may not, but will trump help fracture the gop party?

There are some similarities to the UK. The Government must pass a Finance Act every year in order to collect income and corporation tax as these expire each year (however, VAT is permanent).

The Government has a interim period of a few months to pass a Finance Act after the end of the tax year. However, if they still can't pass one then they have to return all income and corporation tax collected in the period.

They could, in theory, still continue in power without these taxes but collect VAT (can't amend it though) and borrow the rest.

In reality, the Government would fall and there would be a General Election.

I wonder just how many changes the Americans will look to make once Trump's presidency is over.

This months pay checks of Zero amount are starting to be sent today. Air traffic controllers are either getting no pay, or being furloughed

More than 24,000 FAA employees are working without pay, since their positions are considered vital for “life and safety.” Another more than 17,000 have been furloughed, told to stop doing their jobs, including the vital training work needed to bring much-needed additional air traffic controllers into the workforce after years of retirements have thinned the ranks.

Trump is used to not paying people en-masse when work has been done, so no orange skin off his nose.

Having had breakfast, I think there's a bigger question to be asked here.

Why are we now finding out that the FBI started an investigation into trump as a russian agent
Why did Manaforts lawyers put in a document proof that there was collusion/conspracy, then make that available 'mistakenly'

Any link to William Barr's start of confirmation hearings into becoming Attorney General? After all the Attorney General overseas the FBI

Edit: And it’s long been reported that Donald Trump drafted a letter explaining his firing of James Comey which was highly self-incriminating, but then White House Counsel Don McGahn intervened and convinced Trump not to send it, and that the unsent letter eventually ended up in Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s hands.

The NY Times piece reveals that the FBI had a copy of the letter at the time it opened the counterintelligence probe, before Mueller was even hired. So who gave it to the FBI? McGahn? We know he was assisting the trump investigation later on, did he start much earlier than thought?

You've got to love Sarah Sanders response - she's unemployable outside so is staying to the bitter end

“This is absurd. James Comey was fired because he’s a disgraced partisan hack, and his Deputy Andrew McCabe, who was in charge at the time, is a known liar fired by the FBI. Unlike President Obama, who let Russia and other foreign adversaries push America around, President Trump has actually been tough on Russia.”

Now, calling anyone else a known liar, when also referencing trump in the same sentence? trump tough on Russia? Far from it
