This indeed is true. I got caught in the protests on the A16 just outside Calais on Monday and had over two hours sitting in the car thinking about how the UK establishment would benefit from some of that.

Thing is though It'll never happen. Placate most Brits with whatever sparkly new tat the marketing departments of multinational corporations convince them they can't live without and three episodes of Eastenders a week and lend them the money to buy a Black Friday telly to watch them on and they'll be happy enough.

Then said multinationals with the collusion of government and the banks can st all over them for life. It's a form of modern slavery.

Seems it’s starting again

This time in Paris with 30k marching and they are saying it’s turned into a general anti-macron protest

Reports that tear gas and water cannon have already been used this morning

it has, i think i need to move to france and get citizenship.they seem to understand that politicians and civil servants are supposed to be there to serve the public, not the reverse.

I'm not sure I follow. They may be protesting but that isn't the same as achieving anything and presumably many of those protesting elected Macron in the first place.

those that voted for him didn't do so on being raped by increasing fuel taxes i presume ? the french way appears to be vote in public servants ,then if they do things that have a significant detrimental effect on the public they ask for them to stop. if they don't stop they take physical action. now they might not always achieve their aims, but it shows they won't just huff and puff and do nothing about politicians taking the piss. it does work sometimes, has done here with the poll tax.

It strikes me that a good chunk of the French population has it pretty good and they would be happy if “progress” just stopped.

We were there a few weeks ago for a wine festival. We drove across a country that appeared to be mostly empty space, with no traffic jams. The village was a bit busy, but not inundated. They could have a festival without a load of weirdos showing up and smashing things. As token Rosbeefs, we were fine, with a small amount of pisstaking. The food was excellent - restaurants, supermarkets loaded with the sort of stuff that you just can’t get in the U.K. - and cheap as well.

We did the whole tasting thing, and got chatting to some of the producers. Small family businesses that provide a living, no great ambition to expand at the expense of quality, beautiful (but ramshackle) houses and a couple of crap Citroens.

Any politician who messes with this is going to get a face full of grief.

It's started to get nasty today in Paris, fire bombs being thrown by protesters and the police responding with water canon, also, protesters say they are going to continue with the protests.

Surely petrol is an alternative to diesel to people in rural communities?
unless using some small petrol engine and large diesel, like 1L petrol vs 2L diesel
in my case my 1.6i will still cost more on fuel than my 2.0d even the fuel price have 10p difference
I would rather switch to EV if diesel tax/fuel price hike

Why are most of the comments up the side so disgustingly anti-Jew? "Burn the Jews" , "Throw some Jews on top!" etc.

I'm glad the British are not like that...

The protests are no longer just about the cost of fuel taxes, they have been taken over by the left wing activists (although the presidents office conveniently label the protesters as far right!) and the list of demands being made include:

the lowering of all taxes;
the creation of a citizens' assembly to replace the Senate;
the reduction of the carbon tax, as well as the consumption tax on energy products (TICPE);
the cancellation of a draft law on palm oil biofuel;
the ban on glyphosate reversed;
the abandonment of the project to renew the French car fleet with electric vehicles;
a cut in employer charges;
increase pensions;
a reduction in salaries for ministers and those in government posts;
a cut in privileges for former elected officials.

It appears that the French have woken up and realised that Macron fooled them.

He claimed that he was "not like the rest." In fact, he was exactly like the rest.

Approval rating of low 20's %, the Far Right ahead in polling for MEP's and yellow jacket protests/ riots across France all show he is in trouble.

I am sure he thinks of himself as a Napoleon figure, he has that arrogance, but the French have seen through his act and he wont be forgiven for taking them as fools.

I was in France in September 2017 and this August and was astounded at the prices of products in supermarkets, bars and restaurants. France is an expensive place to live and getting more so, as a result of government policy, it seems. No wonder "the peasants are revolting".

Cheers,

Tony
