Morning all

Took the car out for a drive this morning. First time in a couple of weeks and for some reason when I connected my phone (iPhone 8 Plus) via the charging/playback lead I kept getting the message “iPod unreadable” showing. I have a very old iPod in there too with the old 30 pin connector which worked fine. The only thing I can think of is that I recently installed iOS 12.1.2 and perhaps that is the issue. I have a Bovee in there too so it’s no big deal if it won’t work with the cable. Just thought I’d ask if anyone else has had the same issue at all?

Just checked mine on my 08 DB9 and yes its the same with same phone & sw - connect via apple cable to usb socket and play music and it doesnt come out via aux, ipod, usb etc - just plays via the speaker on the phone even though the phone charges.

On the original ipod connector cable it just says incompatible device on the phone and same reading as you get on the car.

Well in true Aston Martin style I did what we all usually do. Alarm on, leave the car for a while. Alarm off, cables out and then reconnected back again. Hey presto all seems normal now. I guess just a traditional electrical glitch that we are all used to. Don’t you just love the old tech? Who needs A class hand me downs anyway?! :-)

I've had this issue too and I believe it is an Apple one, where they restrict the connection to read until you authenticate/open the iPhone. I find that if I open the iPhone first then plug into the Aston I don't get the issue.

Hi KiwiSG

That’s interesting. I’ve not heard that before. Next time I use it I’ll do the same thing. Thanks for the tip!

I can't comment on Astons as mine were a bit pre-iPhone, however non Apple charging cables regularly and randomly ask for the phone to be open before charging and reading content. I have an iPhone X and a MacBook - I only charge my X from my MacBook. Probably every 10th charge or so it asks me to open the phone before it will allow charging or any other connection.

Hi KiwiSG

The car has been tucked up in the garage for the last few weeks due to the weather. As soon as I try your tip, I’ll let you know the result.

Hi again KiwiSG

Tried it today and it worked. So from now on, I’ll open the phone before connecting it. Thanks very much for the tip. Much appreciated.

Yep. Mind also stopped working due to me clearing out all of my music from iTunes.
Adding one song back in initiated the handshake and I've had no problems since.
