Which criminal offence have they committed?
Apart from being grossly insensitive, insulting and crass. Given the significance of the Cenotaph to all the war dead playing silly games with it, it is liable to cause distress. Ergo, I think, but do not know, that the Public Order Act 1986 section 4A might catch it...

location? what was put up was not abusive or threatening so s4a PO act wont apply. the comma, is read as an AND within hearing or sight etc.
"(1) A person is guilty of an offence if he/she:
(a) uses threatening [or abusive] words or behaviour, or disorderly behaviour, or
(b) displays any writing, sign or other visible representation which is threatening [or abusive],
within the hearing or sight of a person likely to be caused harassment, alarm or distress thereby."

The correct course of action this morning should have seen them all thrown in the van and charged under 4A PO and if the CPS at a later date decides not to pursue it then so be it. In the mean time the scum would not now be making capital out of it.
I think whomever made the call to not intervene this morning needs a talking to.

PACE Code G would probably put a stop to your plan also.
It was very cringeworthy, self defeating, pompous and crass. But, that's not illegal.
It's arguably in poor taste, but that's not illegal.
I find Laurence Fox makes my teeth itch, but he's entitled to his opinion. I find laying a political wreath at the Cenotaph makes my teeth itch, but it's the same freedom granted to Mr Fox.
We can't pick and choose when to apply the law. As Rowan Atkinson sets out very well in his speech, we should not locking people up for calling a police horse gay, nor for pissing around with poppies.

I think we’ll agree to disagree on that. The perpetrators knew it would cause distress and have said so.

err no. Its clearly NOT a criminal offence as per the Act and would be an abuse of police power to try and push it as such. equally its right for people to protest even if distasteful which is the whole point our society. Unless abuse of power by the Home sec for covid protests!)The correct course of action this morning should have seen them all thrown in the van and charged under 4A PO and if the CPS at a later date decides not to pursue it then so be it. You and I may feel it distasteful or disrespectful but thankfully hurt feelings are not illegal.

4A PO Act
1)A person is guilty of an offence if, with intent to cause a person harassment, alarm or distress, he—
(a)uses threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour, or disorderly behaviour, or
(b)displays any writing, sign or other visible representation which is threatening, abusive or insulting,
Not seeing it not being applicable for what occurred today at the Cenotaph on Armistice Day....

At 8 o'clock this morning XR defaced the cenotaph with a climate change wreath and banner... WTF were they thinking? Does anybody still support these nutters. No doubt the police stood by in stark contrast to the weekend.
It is almost as if the police and XR are deliberately insulting every decent person in the country.

Well, as far as I'm concerned if they think that kind of action will help their cause, they need serious therapy.
How about section under Mental Health Act?
It seems that every time they do something to promote their cause that the rest of the country finds abhorrent, they simply say they don’t care as their cause is more important than anything else. Absolutely self-serving scum of the first order for this little jape, and others. How about section under Mental Health Act?
I didn’t want to comment. It is a shame that it generated any reaction at all, for that is the way to fight these scumbags - just ignore them if the law does not allow them to be restricted to protesting in a more respectable fashion.

Willy Wonka : I'm sorry, but all questions *must* be submitted in writing. And so, in the greatest of secrecy, I transported the entire population of Oompa Loompas to my factory here.
Veruca Salt : Hey, Daddy, *I* want an Oompa Loompa! I want you to get me an Oompa Loompa right away!
Mr. Salt : All right, Veruca, all right. I'll get you one before the day is out.
Veruca Salt : [whining] I want an Oompa Loompa now!
Violet Beauregarde : Can it, you nit!

Fantastic news.
I assume the protester was dragged off like they did to the grandmother who was protesting against the lockdowns?

Just when you think XR have reached the bottom of the barrel. They do something as utterly crass and stupid as this...

A woman has been arrested outside of Windsor Castle after “running topless” through the street.
Several police officers were pictured arresting her after the incident which took place during the Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral. She allegedly ran into the road screaming “save the planet” just after the crowds gathered for the funeral began to clap. The woman then jumped onto a statue of Queen Victoria before several officers removed her from the scene on Castle Hill.
Mourners had just finished their minute of silence when the woman broke away from the crowd.
