I've had enough of domestic vacuum cleaners. I've tried everything from Dyson downward. I'm bored of mediocre suction.

Where do I go from here? I've looked at websites selling commercial/industrial ones, but they all seem to be geared at large capacity or excellent durability. I don't care much about capacity, and I'm not planning to throw it down the stairs. I just want to be able to clean the dog hair out of my carpets.

So if I want something siginificantly more powerful than a normal domestic vacuum cleaner, but that can still realistically be used in a house, what should I buy?

All suggestions welcome (both sensible and idiotic).

A lot of Apple products suck. Do they also make vacuum cleaners?

Sebo, but only because I have one and it's excellent. Miele are probably OK too smile

Doesn't matter which brand, it's an EU directive that limits the power!

It's worse than that - it's an EU directive that was lobbied for heavily by ze Germans purely to put the UK (Dyson) at a disadvantage.... We should be up in arms and looking to have some sort of vote against this kind of thing..... I'm sure we could get someone at Dyson on board smile

See if you can find an 1800W one of these: Miele Upright Cat And Dog Vacuum Cleaner
Had ours for ages & still works very well. Heavy to lift up but nimble enough pushing it around. Build quality is excellent & should last for several more years.

For dog hair the powered brush bar is IMO more important than suction

Another vote for Sebo here. 1300w upright.

See if you can find a refurbished Kirby upright.

I had one for years and it was powerful enough to suck the Staines out of Middlesex!

ive never been a fan of Dyson so got Miele last year, it has a power knob on it and if i turn it up full i cant move it on the carpet and starts to lift the carpet. Been the most powerful vacuum cleaner ive owned.

Look for the ones that chimney sweeps use, don't look good but they are powerful. You can also use a smaller diameter hose

Absolutely this. Indeed too much suction may actually reduce airflow if too good a seal with the carpet.

These things are mega powerful, heavy duty metal beasts. The other stuff mentioned are plastic kids toys in comparison.

Just for reference:

It’s a regulation not a directive.
You have conflated two stories, one being about maximum motor power and the other was Dyson’s concern regarding the way that energy efficiency (well suction) was measured (it was measured with an empty bag).
Dyson won the case.

scratchchin not so sure about a roller brush for pet hair. My Miele is the type with the flat head on the end of the pole. The suction head has a section of clothes brush on it which gets up pet hair very well. The day to day sucker is a gtech which has a roller and it does give the carpet that just-vacuumed look, but whenever I use the Miele it picks up more hair which it rolls into thin sausage shapes before sucking them up.

I'd spend a bit of time brushing the dog. Once a day should sort it and the dog would be happier to.
