Someone will make excuses, oh someone already has, but the truth is that there is no punishment that is allowed that is suitable. They need to be given a lot of community work and their parents made to pay.
Harsh but until parents start instilling values and decency and making sure they know what their kids are doing, then we will continue having things like this happen.
A lot of people look down their nose at those whose hobbies are railways or model making but they are skilled dedicated people who deserve better than this
people that do this for a hobby are a broad church. a very good friend of mine is the type that would literally pull their arms off and beat them to death if he caught them smashing his display up.he is a builder and you would look twice if someone told you what his hobby is.i couldn't believe the time ,effort and skill he puts into making things like buildings, the attention to detail is amazing.Harsh but until parents start instilling values and decency and making sure they know what their kids are doing, then we will continue having things like this happen.

i agree 100% regarding parental responsibility and a long spell of community work for the offenders, preferably carried out in luminous orange shirts with mindless vandal written across them.

I build models so know and understand that, in the media, for many years people like us have been laughed at and ridiculed. This is what happens when you engender such attitudes.
Despite that, I would rather talk to these lads (assuming it was lads) and try to get to know what was going through their minds to decide this would be a fun thing to do. I certainly wouldn't advocate killing them, as one poster seems to be suggesting.

As a child I used to fear and respect the police and justice system.
Now (as still a law abiding person) I see it as a joke.
Take away their sky/phone/Xbox etc hit them where it hurts. Don't allow social interactions (that seems to be what they care about now)

The damages should be deducted from the perpetrators parents child benefits till the full cost is repaid.
There's no deterrent for scum like this so extrajudicial community punishment should be metered out to their family like they do in Ireland.
Booked marked this so when the perps are found and are from a middle class family I can have a good chuckle. Even better if they come from one of the prep / grammar schools in the area. Honestly...what can you do?
The parent will be a pathetic waste of space (Just the Mum, Father nowhere to be seen as is usual with feral kids).
The only thing that may have an impact is to ask the perpetrators to gather two things they value (iPhone, Xbox etc), give them a hammer and get them to choose which one they have to smash up.

I wouldn't stop at one thing. Get all their valued belongings and make them watch as they get destroyed with a sledgehammer in front of them. The parent will be a pathetic waste of space (Just the Mum, Father nowhere to be seen as is usual with feral kids).

I know what you mean - while my gut reaction is this I'd hate for that sort of medieval/stone-age/vigilante 'justice' to find it's way here. The problem is that with the law not deterring bad 'uns I can see a breaking point at some stage in the future
I saw something similar, someone had restored an old car, cant remember what, nothing fancy, and it got pushed into a pond "for a larf".
Other people and there stuff arent there for a laugh, imagine the countless hours of skilled work and accomplishment invested in all that and destroyed in a few minutes, some made by folk no longer with us or no longer able to do it.
I would hope this is all conveyed to them, and then everything they hold dear is taken from their houses and set fire to, in front of them to give them an inkling of the anguish they have caused.
Some people are just animals, I work on old planes and we havent had bad damage but some folk use keys or a coin to carve names onto stuff, it is essential that they leave a memento of their auspicious visit.
Like littering, imagine if everyone damaged stuff because they can, its a weird mentality and it is only the fault of the individual, they have the choice to not do it, nobody else should have to keep you entertained so you dont destroy stuff, there is stuff to do if you have a brain and an imagination, but some only every take and never contribute, they cant comprehend creating anything.

I went along to the show on Saturday morning and was told of the break in by one of the chaps form the railway club, who was turning people away – he looked really shocked and distraught.
I can’t imagine how awful some of those modellers are feeling now – to see things you have carefully crafted and assembled over hundreds of hours just stamped on and kicked around.
Their scratch built items are pretty much irreplaceable – some of these men won’t have enough time left in their lives to reconstruct 25-year’s-worth of models.
Fortunately, one of the display rooms was left alone and some of the layouts and retail stands escaped the destruction.
Credit to the police who got there very quickly and caught the scum.
(Local plod, plus Armed Response Vehicle and ‘enthusiastic’ Alsatian police dog from what I have read on the net).
As to the background of the w*****s who did this – we will have to wait and see.

That (or something similar) was near me - restored Hillman Imp or Morris Minor or something pushed into Chislehurst Ponds over New Year a few Years ago. heartbreaking.I don’t know if removing/depriving items belonging to the scum would make any difference. The only thing they value is getting ‘spect from others, and making sure they don’t get dissed. I suspect peer pressure and the feeling that “these people have it. I don’t want them to have it” is what goes through their tiny minds.
Either way, I think they should be locked up until sentence is passed, which should be that they repair the damage and then imprisoned for a time to be determined by the victims of the crime.

e've never done the 'soft stuff' properly. We send more people to prison for longer than ever before.
Sweden has, it doesn't work.they do some things well, but that's for another thread.
I'm with the 'throw the fking scum away' brigade on this.
Just what is the point of endlessly trying to 're-educate' the tts at our (taxpayers) expense?? The problem is seemingly getting worse, & all we do is wring our hands & blame it on Tory cuts, suffering 'communities' or some other crap. As others have mentioned: when I were a lad, we genuinely respected the police.
Its a shame Australia has turned into a modern state - we should have kept it as a penal colony............
