Any help is appreciated.

I have a mid 2012 MacBook Pro that I’ve currently tried to upgrade, from 4gb ram to 16gb and 500gb hdd to twin SSDs (500gb each) run in raid 0.

The physical installation went well, however I cannot install OS X no matter which way I try. I’ve used the recovery option but i believe OS X Lion is no longer supported by apple (the machine originally shipped with this) so when it gets to download it fails with an error message along the lines of “unable to download additional components needed”.

I’ve tried creating a bootable usb with OS X Sierra following the instructions from apple. But the installation hangs up on 6 seconds remaining with play load check sum error. A bit of googling seems to list the date as a problem but I’ve corrected in terminal to the current date and still the same message.

I’ve tried several usb sticks thinking the installation is the problem to no avail and I can’t update newer than OS X Sierra as the time machine back up I have of my personal data won’t copy across to a newer OS X.

I’ve also tried booting from time machine copy again to no avail.

Any help appreciated by any apple users out there.

Did you make a Time Machine or other back up before your stripped out the old HDD?

Can you try installing from a USB stick to an external HDD or another USB stick (it is not the most responsive way)... that would at least get you an operating OS?

And if you didn't can you pop the old HDD back in and then make one?
