If you don't like Owen Jones don't read his articles.

Whether you agree with the opinion pieces or not, The Guardian does some fantastic journalism.

I'll read The Daily Mail but I can't even work out what its purpose is any more other than trying to wind people up.
But he keeps popping up on my telly, gets angry and walks off.

I quite enjoy The Daily Mail. Some of it anyway. I think as long as one is aware no matter what you read it's mostly only opinion and not gospel then it doesn't matter. Newspapers exist to entice you to spend money on them by spinning a story in a certain fashion. All of them.

With the rejection of Dacre, now that he's done his job for his bosses of getting the readers to fear the eu, the new editor has the chance of not so much turning the paper around, as making it a newspaper. It can't get worse than under Dacre, so it looks possible.

My mum is 80, she spent her whole life working hard and doing the right thing. She didn't retire until she was 71 when she worked nights in a home looking after mentally disabled kids. She spent years doing voluntary work for the blind and handicapped in what little spare time she had. Her best friends are a couple from Mauritius who she worked with for years. She's a lovely, friendly old dear without a bad bone in her body.

She's read the Mail all her life.

Earlier today in another thread I read a post from dobbo - possibly the most odious member on PH - saying everyone who reads the mail is a nasty racist.

Cool story bro but honestly judging a person's entire life by the paper they read is about as stupid as judging them on the colour of their skin.

Yup, still better the Guardian. At least the DM did not use a complex off shore tax avoidance scheme to avoid pay its dues... whilst castigating others for doing similar.

The EU referendum has spurred on feelings of nationalist sentiment, with the Daily Mail spearheading an anti-Brexit campaign that aims to "take back control" of Britain. One of its most notorious headlines, "Enemies of the People" attacked judges for ruling that Brexit could not be triggered without a Westminster vote.

But the Mail's owner, Lord Rothermere, has been complicit in the tax avoidance scandal as his company is currently registered in Bermuda and Jersey, allowing it to withhold funds from a country his newspaper claims to love. If the Mail and its owner are truly patriotic then surely he would insist in the company being wholly UK registered, and pay its proper taxes.

“If you won’t pay our taxes, we won’t eat your cheese, Kraft.” So runs the Mail on Sunday’s campaign against the US firm that has taken over Cadbury and is transferring ownership of some of Britain’s favourite brands to Switzerland to avoid tax.

The Guardian trust was set up to avoid tax. The ownership of the Guardian has been, since its inception a tax avoidance instrument.

That article refers to the billionaire owner of the mail being a non Dom and using that status to reduce his tax bill. Right or wrong it’s legal. Not the newspaper, that is U.K. domiciled.

The guardian used a very similar strategy to mitigate its tax liability.

A quick google of the Kraft thing links to a single article in 2010.

Certainly the Guardian seems to be the one campaigning to get rid of off shore tax arrangements, after they have off shored themselves.

Both are grotty toss rags. One is a slightly more hypocritical grotty toss rag.

The Guardian isn't biased. It has some ridiculous opinion pieces but it's general reporting is excellent and rigorous.

I'm afraid If it's written by a human, and not entirely quantitative, then it's biased.

we all know that the DM is the paper everyone loves to hate - however are they really any worse than the offerings from most of the rest of the meeja?

Yes, I know that there are huge number of clickbait articles on their website (I guess this subsidises which means it's still free to look at - for better or worse), but other media outlets also rely on these

Yes they are biased to the right - but are they any worse in their bias than the sun , the express, the mirror, the Daily Telegraph, the observer or the graun?
Yes they've had some distinctly dodgy associations in the past - but I suspect so do quite a few of the others
Some of their opinion pieces are st - but then the gruan has owen jones...
The Mail regularly breaks new stories that other papers would love to have. However it also has the most trivial celeb news as headline when all sorts of other things are going on in the world.

I think the Mail is an essential source of news as long as a) it's not your only daily source and b) you have half a brain and can think for yourself.

I read the site daily.

It’s a hate filled rag. Although at least they’re open about it, others hide their hatred and bile behind fancy language and attempts to sound intelligent.

Think of the DM like Trump. Spouts st to get a rise, knows what their supporters want and don’t hide what they do.
Complete Rubbish.

The Mail has no hate, it has only love... for the money it makes.

They will post whatever they think will continue to get them their ridiculous number of site visitors. For example pre latest EU referendum they went all anti-Brexit. When Brexit Party did well, they had Farage back in favour the next day.

They don't give a st.

Unless its James Stunt, they do hate him hehe

It's the DM's anti - BBC thing I don't get, well out of character,
that must alienate a fair number of it's staunchly middle England demographic.

What's the history of this unseemly spatette ?

Did the DM badmouth the beeb during the war, bhing about the number of journalists getting a freebie
in France covering the D-Day landings or is it more recent, maybe since the BBC has gone all snowflaky,
inclusive, employing gays and [ gasp ] women and steadfastly refusing to repeat It Ain't Half Hot Mum ?

Funny thing is there isn't a left wing equivalent, i.e. a mid-market left-leaning paper between the Guardian and the Mirror (I don't think the I really counts as it's just a small Guardian).

I suppose that is a reflection of left wing views in the population at large, which have never been prevalent in lower middle class society.
Left wing equivelant of the DM is Morning Star.

1. It's more erudite. If you want to improve your mastery of the English language, you can do a lot worse than read the Guardian.
2. Because of 1, they cant be as blatant as the DM, let alone the Daily Express with their lies as the readership are smart enough to spot obvious lies.
1. Not sure about that, it was called the Grauniad for a reason.

2. Have you read the comments to their articles?? I wouldn't use "smart" to describe a lot of them.

BTW, I read the mail for entertainment, the guardian to warm up, and come here for reasoned debate. 😉

The DM make up stories to sell more papers. Others may/may not do the same.
