Strange?

I don't recall doing that?
Nor me. They’d best not ask either. I might swear at her......... wink
Try serving your country rather than taking from it.....
Lots of ways to ‘serve your country’ without signing up to kill people in foreign lands.

I don't know what a wet-wipe is, but I definitely did not swear allegiance to the Queen, or anyone else.
As a Navy type you joined a service formed under Royal Prerogative as opposed to an Act of Parliament like the Army and Royal Air Force, so, in effect your swore allegiance to the Monarch by joining “her” Navy.
Carry on shipmate.

I must have missed something.

I was army, not navy.

Then either you did swear allegiance and don’t remember or didn’t realise what it was at the time or you never really joined.

Oh, I think I "really joined"! I distinctly remember.

When did the "allegiance" thing come in?

I was conscripted.

I remember the oath being along the lines of swearing allegiance to god queen and country. Being the only atheist in the room I had to say the oath all by myself, after everyone else had finished, but without the god bit.

It's funny that a forum that's always seemed quite anti-royal to me seems to have so much dislike for a couple who want to be less royal.

The current wording of the oath dates back to 1868.
The requirement to take it is covered under The Army Act.

We must have been rummaging through Wikipedia at the same time?

Nope. No Oath of allegiance. Royal Engineers, two years National Service.

No Oath of allegiance.
