If something is illegal, and someone does it, they're usually punished for it.
What was/is the punishment for this illegal act?
The lack of punishment does not mean it is not illegal - plenty of people are found guilty of crimes and not punished. He could have been found in contempt of Parliament. What was/is the punishment for this illegal act?

Punishment?
Semantics and clutching at straws. Both are against the law. Illegal is where an act is carried out which is forbidden by law - you cannot cross the road - but you do cross the road notwithstanding the explicit prohibition. Unlawful is something that is not authorised by law. You do x, but the law does not specifically forbid x. For example, if a law provided for crossing points on a road and said “you may cross the road at crossing points”, but didn’t specifically say you cannot cross at other points, crossing at other points would be unlawful. Murder is unlawful killing as another example.

So it was illegal but not really very illegal because nothing happened other than BJ not being able to have it - So like stealing a car, getting caught with the punishment being to just hand it back and move on.
It's almost as if this st gets made up.
As an aside - which illegal acts do you get caught at, goes to court (a really flash one in this case), found guilty but not punished?

Note in OED
Illegal and unlawful have slightly different meanings, although they are often used interchangeably. Something that is illegal is against the law, whereas an unlawful act merely contravenes the rules that apply in a particular context. Thus handball in soccer is unlawful, but it is not illegal. A third word with a similar meaning is illicit: this tends to encompass things that are forbidden or disapproved of by custom or society, as in an illicit love affair.

So, would not complying with the Benn Act be illegal or unlawful?Illegal and unlawful have slightly different meanings, although they are often used interchangeably. Illegal as it is written law. Interestingly prorouging Parliament for 5 weeks is still not illegal as the supreme Court made it clear that it was the particular circumstances of the timing that made it unlawful in this case. Boris said:
We would campaign day after day for the people of this country to be released from subjection to a Parliament that has outlived its usefulness.

These horrible MP's (who were voted to be in Parliament until 2022) won't agree with anything I do or say. Wibble.
