Whether or not you use Royal Mail plenty do with almost 70m letters a day being posted although this is a decline of what used to be posted it does prove that plenty do use and rely on the service.
Obviously email & similar has massively eaten into their business, as have e-cards, online banking & paperless utilities etc.

That's only going to go in one direction.

Is that because they can't find your address, or becasue you're not in?
They deliver that little red card without fail when I'm at work. It must be the same for basically anyone with a job. Amazon get me three parcels a week.

I guess thats becasue Amazon drivers are willing to work unsocial hours - also perhaps that (at least in our case) RM are not permitted to leave parcels in a shed or next door, Amazon/DPD etc will.

The issue seems to be the CWU say RM have gone back on what was agreed, if this is true then of course they can strike (it will speed up the demise of RM but that is another issue). But somehow like with TFL I get the feeling management ask for x in return for y then don't get x but are expected to deliver y in this case a shorter working week in return for increased efficiency.
Agreements are usually multi-year affairs that bind both parties to the agreement. If the required productivity and efficiency targets (that have been previous agreed) have not been met by the workers then the next years pay increase or whatever is generally off the table and withheld until targets have been met. It’s usually in everyone’s interest to make the deal work which is why I’m slightly sceptical with RM senior management on this one.

As a side note, TfL always get their x in before the deal comes into effect but after its signed off so this problem doesn’t arise. y is generally always in place before x is paid smile

Seems to me that the couriers have got their respective acts together with respect to packages but, like others have said, the so-called last mile is the difficult one for <100g stuff and similar. Having said that, I'm convinced I don't get a daily delivery any more, I've been working from home for the whole of 2019 and, being semi-rural, I'd spot a little red van if it was passing bay.

RM still competitive for smaller parcels, under 2kg (or they were until I got out of all that last year).

The Post Office has done a pretty good job of staying relevant I think, particularly the move into convenience stores which operate extended hours.

Postman brings me junk mail, occasional council / bank / utility stuff that should all be e-mail anyway, and Autocar. The latter is a challenge as frankly one needs some lavatory reading material. But for everything else, specifically packages, pretty much any other delivery works better with pretty much any other carrier. And I include Herpes and Yodel in that actually because even they have been ok recently.

They’ll suffer when people find out how easy it is to drop parcels off at the CO op for a fraction of the cost
Generally speaking parcel2go is cheaper than Royal Mail, and I drop mine off at an outlet in our local ASDA.

Pay for it on line print out the label and Bobs your uncle.

Amazon tried to deliver a parcel today but it was a (unknown to us) ‘signed for’ delivery and we weren’t in. bks I thought, I’m not going to get it any time soon. They turned up again this evening. Awesome service.

Our local PO is in Tesco store. PO just announced it will be open for less hours although store hours not changing.

I was told by a local postie that Royal Mail want all there posties to be self employed similar to other courier / delivery drivers. So forcing them into a gig economy type employee. I don't know if this is correct but would be interesting.

My missus used to work in a sales job for them 20 years ago above one of the big London sorting offices.

Some of the reasons they went out on strike were hilarious: whole lot walked out one day after a postie was sacked for assaulting his manager.

They also had this weird rule where if you got back from doing your round early it was not cool to be asked to do anything else in the remainder of your shift.

Sad thing for her was that she was doing tenders for business mail jobs, and she actually had to add a "staff being on strike/jobsworths" factor of safety in to her prices, which meant she was rarely competitive.

Royal Mail and Parcelforce have a “No Signature Required” option for senders to use. Senders choose not to use it, even when they write “leave in shed” or similar on the label. If it’s not an official “NSR” label then they can, and do, lose their job for leaving it without a signature.

So it’s unfair to blame RM staff for needing a signature.

I've also never had a small parcel crushed to make it fit through the letter box by RM. Same can't be said for Hermes (who then refused to compensate for the damaged contents despite me having paid the insurance). Nor have RM ever thrown items over my fence into the back garden (Yodel) or left a parcel in a recycle bin which was out for collection (Amazon).

I'd rather go to the collection point with the red card (or request a redelivery) than deal with the aftermath of a Yodel delivery.

I get better service getting parcels delivered from My Hermes than I do Royal Mail, now that's saying something. Not Yodel though, they're still relatively useless round here.
