Any good guides on setting this up? I've struggled with the two I've found...

Depends what you want to do and why, and what your understanding of a VPN is.

A VPN simple creates a tunnel over your current internet connection to another third party location, and pumps all connections down that tunnel. It still leaves your device on the local network visible. So that needs to be secure. If the third party VPN provide is compromised then all of your connections down that tunnel is also compromised.

Hant's rat suggestion only works if you want to encapsulate your connection back to your house from a mobile device outside of your home. Most people would prefer that their home ISP do not know what they are doing - be it watching dodgy online football streams.

You additionally may want to watch USA content, which means you need USA geographic, you won't get this from hants rat's suggestion.

NordVPN works well for any of the above. Ignore the fact it was 'hacked'.. it really was not. It was like hitting a bumble bee from a mile away whilst on horseback galloping through a meadow of rocks. Saying that... leicester city achieved it.

As above

If you want to simply secure your connections such as online banking or access your home network whilst out and about then OpenVPN on a Raspberry pi is simply as very cheap to setup.

If you're looking to anonymise your traffic whilst at home from your ISP then I'd recommend Nord VPN. Bare in mind though that if someone has access to the Nord VPN servers and really wants to view the traffic then they can. Don't worry about the recent Nord VPN reports, there was no proof anyone was actually sifting through browsing logs. A third party just made a mistake with server setup.

If you do go with Nord vpn, you'll get an extra 3 months free with my affiliate URL : https://nordvpn.com/special/dark-single/?utm_mediu...

Are those free VPNs simply another version of proxy IP addresses that Opera web browser uses and calls a VPN?
If so these are useful for obtaining a geo-IP for browsing and getting access to blocked content, but I'm not sure they actually 'hide' internet data from your original ISP.

You can never be totally private when using a VPN anyway. Even if the VPN isn't hacked and all your personal information taken like what happened with NordVPN and Tunnelbear recently.

I'm a bit wary of the free ones. I used to use one but apparently they way it worked was you connected via the connection of another user of their software, so other people could be accessing all sorts of dodgy sites via your ISP. Not entirely sure if that's true but if it is I don't want any part of it.

I use PureVPN to access things like iPlayer form aboard and it works really well, except recently the Firestick app has stopped connecting. No trouble on the laptop though.

Surely TOR built into the 'Brave' browser does the job for free?

TOR is slow, VPN's are not (and help me by not having my ISP throttle my connection) - I use Nord VPN from home and a mix of Nord / OpenVPN on a rpie when out and about
