When the Queen dies I will be very sad indeed.

Not sure why this thread is so jokey?

I'm not sure why it exists. Has PH become the home of fake news?

The planning for the event envisages miles of queues of people seeking to show their respects.

It will be one of the largest ever peacetime security operations.

I hope it will be a long time before we find out.
Sure. How does that relate to what I was on about?

Your post made it sound like you believe people wouldn’t be as shocked or treat it as seriously as when Diana died.

A nice British cup of tea

Ok, some of my teacups have not been washed for a while smile

Of course the Queen had not met Ronald Reagan when that was made .....

Both my mum who gave me that cup and saucer and Ronnie have passed away, she is still going.

She's been good. A positive role model, to each and every one of us.

Oh yes, a role model we can all relate to as we argue with our neighbours about pavement trees, shared driveways and toilet porches.

it was about shutting down radio/tv etc. Tech has moved on to make that obsolete and opinions on what we 'should' be told.

For real? Forcing her sister to give up the one decent bloke she knew? Presiding over a gaggle of entitled brats? Swanning about doing no work and slurping Dubonnet? What sort of role model message do inherited wealth and unearned status convey? Hey kids, wanna go about in a gold coach? Then get lucky: have a distant ancestor who was a successful armed gangster.

Her sister was a disgrace. Her "boyfriend" was John "Biffo" Bindon, London gangster and Led Zeppelin bodyguard.....he used to amuse her with his party piece, balancing six half pint glasses on his todger...

‘Forcing’ her sister was rather more giving an ultimatum. She could have gone after him. Maggie wanted to keep what she already had. I’m sure she knew other decent blokes, maybe some for whom she’d be willing to sacrifice the inherited wealth and unearned status that seems to irritate BV so much.

Madge does do a job. She does it well. I’m unaware of any other monarch who’s done a better one.

She ‘goes about’ in state Rollers, some of some vintage, but only to occasions where it is expected. Generally, it’s a short stretch. My belief is that she was given her big Rollers, and some some time ago.

As for what appears to be a suggestion that what someone’s distant relatives do somehow reflects on that person is rather odd. We have a TV programme where people trace their ancestors and bathe in the reflected glory, but it shows them as rather shallow I think. I also think it rather shallow to suggest it works the other way.

‘Unearned status’ is arguable on the first word. But let’s let that go. It is not the monarch who is saluted but the position.

One’s children are one’s children. Andy is a shambles, but for the others, there are lots worse.

I would agree that she could do what she does with less stuff, but that’s detail.

I never saw me saluting someone, or standing to attention in their presence, being any admission on my behalf that I deferred to them. I certainly did not believe everyone else who bowed did either. It’s an action, a bit like standing up when some bod comes into a room.

As for inherited wealth; over a certain sum, my belief is that a significant proportion of it should go to the state. As the sum increases, so should the percentage. There are many who don’t and there're some who fall between, although my beliefs are not extreme. However, as lots of politicians have significant amounts of money – there goes the myth of wealth cascading – it’s unlikely to change for some time. In other words, there are others whom I’d target way before her.

She’s just some old woman in fact. The position is important although not vital. The arrangement works, for which we should be grateful, but that does not mean you should believe she's inherently better than you because she’s got a crown.

+1

You forgot to mention that inherited unearned status keeps the divisive idea of "us and them" going.

More enlightened societies, for example the French and the Germans, got rid of their monarchs
over a century ago and have much more of egalitarian "we're all equal and we are all in it together"
attitude.

Doing as little as possible for 60 odd years at the taxpayers' expense and limiting your
public activities to opening shopping centres and the like isn't something I can admire.

I have nothing against the woman personally, but I don't like the institution and I would
like to leave the Middle Ages behind.

And IIRC Quadrophenia. He was reputed to make as much income from playing gangsters as from being a gangster.
