Afternoon Ladies/Gents,

I've got good roadbike but fancy a winter hack.

Where I live we have a couple of fields/moorland we can run in so was planning a RMZ 450 that's for sale locally, it has a daytime MOT but has ZERO lights on it, no break light, headlight, horn or anything, not even a stand runs out of MOT end of the month.

Just curious about this as I literally know nothing about daytime MOTs etc.

I'm just wanting something I can ride in the fields and moorland which the local farmer owns, he only allows it from November to March time and saves me using the pick up to move the bike.

You don't need any lights at all for your bike to get an MOT, but it will be marked as such and hence not legal for use in hours of darkness.
No real issue, but remember in Jan it gets dark pretty early and light pretty late, so do be sensible.

So long as it is taxed insured and had road legal tyres on it, (plus speedo and horn) it doesn't need any lights at all on it, BUT if they are fitted, they MUST work. And I think it you have a rear light you need a front one. So think of it as either ALL lights working, or no lights fitted at all.

Get it, it will be a hoot, best motorcycling you will ever do!

I have a Husqvarna FE350 and can't remember having as much fun on a bike since I sold my KTM supermoto.

Mostly off road and a total blast.

Having lights and a plate makes for an easier time from the fuzz mind, specially the arsey ones.

This is a very timely thread as I've been obsessing over off road bikes too

Is it just me, or do a lot of them sound fishy as off road only?

So went to see the RMZ, turned out it was an utter pig to kick start,I knew it would be but not 8-10 kicks even after getting it to TDC, lad said it usually starts first kick...... along with a few other things I wasn't a fan.

Anyway abandoned that idea and found a

2008 KTM 250 EXC Six days (bigger fuel tank amongs other extras)
All paperwork
90hrs - 2000 miles on it
2 owners
MOT for 10 months
Stickers are all worn

FULL lighting kit, speedo the works so no faffing about

comes with

Stand
new piston kit
spare tyres
spare plastics
sprockets for off road use (haven't been on it before)
Rapid fill fuel can

Current sprockets on it are geared for the road so it can do 75mph max more than enough for me on the back roads.

£1900 - collecting it Saturday (70 miles away)
It's a youngish lad who has it, he's done 4hrs on it and decided it's not for him and bought a S1000RR instead fair change that.

Will post up some details when i get it along with some pics.

Sounds like a right bargain!

What's the best time of year to pick up an off-roader? I'm assuming it'll be April when the clocks change?

Best time for what exactly?

If its price then there is no fixed time IMO.

If its for conditions then I like late spring and early summer.

If its for temprature then definitely summer as riding in 4 degrees like I did tge other day wasn't huge fun!

Buy when you have the money and it's a good deal buy, whatever that happens to be

This is what I was thinking. Realistically I don't think a decent one can be had for my budget this winter, so I'm thinking keep an eye out late next year...

Any joy then Highlander?

Managed a ride out today as the weather wasn't too bad, saw loads of groups of trail riders, mostly on Husky and KTM TPI's it seemed! One Honda 250 Rally which looked very much outgunned.

Yes smile

Drove 2.5hrs after work last night to collect it, turned out to be a very young lad but bloody hell he described it perfectly.

Starts 1st kick, runs perfect, clutch drags in first a little bit.

Anyway got it home and went out on it today and it's a complete hooligan machine. It's been a hwile since I've been on a crosser.

A few things I have noticed

1 - I need mirrors (lad gave me 2 brand new ones
2 - They wheelie so bloody easy which I didn't expect for a 250
3 - Need to take it easy on the road with the tyres, theyre a decent compoint but a bit skittery in the wet.

Took it offroad and I was laughing like a child from start to finish.

What's your budget ?

I'm on few of the bike FB groups and if you can sift through the crap there are a few bargains around - very little below £1500 some decent RFS KTM around £2000

To answer the original question... at a dirt bike MOT place, the MOT pretty much consists of turning up.

Mine is used almost exclusively for green lanes, I have never visited the garage before and we had a quick chat about bikes and I walked out with a pass.

My mates went further afield, turned up with their bikes in a van and never even unloaded them !

The MOT is the same (there is no daylight MOT as such) you can have NO lights or most have front and rear but no indicators (as they get broken)

Not enough sadly - I was hoping to pick up a project for about 1k and sort it over winter, but being so easy to work on that's what everyone does anyway! There are a few out there for that, but not anything that I fancy (e.g. knackered 125s or chinese crap)

Looks awesome Highlander, enjoy!

Thanks.

Up my way there's plea t KLX, KMX, XR400s for sale around the £1k Mark and they're running projects.

You've got plenty of choice.

It looks a cracker and a bargain for the money you paid.
I'm surprised how easily my 200 lifts the front so I wouldn't be surprised by a 250 doing so hehe

Aye that's what I was surprised about.

I also forgot how cool 2 strokes sound.

I'm lucky where I am it's all single track roads, woods, fields.

Looking forward to doing some good rides over winter.

Ordered new spark plugs, proper jack up stand for it. Lifting it onto the current one isn't fun.

I'll. Probably cha ge the graphics as I've got 2 sets of six days ones so will modify a set.
