just wondering has a car manufacturer ever put a second engine in that wasn't actually connected to the drivetrain just to beef up the sound a bit?

people are complaining about modern exhaust notes a lot these days so what's to stop a 20,000rpm bike engine being stuck at the back hidden somewhere to accompany the noise?

what would the point be? I don't think hearing a 20,000 RPM bike engine all the time is something most people would want to hear. Also, wouldn't be very green really, would it?

If I ever got an electric car I would like a choice of sound effects to play from a speaker outside the car - horse hooves, a steam train, V8, F1, superbike, a herd of cows with bells etc. etc.

No.
But when I was little I stuck one of those flat wooden ice cream spoons into the spokes of my BMX to make it sound like a motorbike.

Apparently a few cars which have 2 engines, although they also drive the wheels...

My father test drove the Twini, reckoned it was lethal.

Maybe the closest is the BMW i3 with range extender or a builders’ van with a Honda generator in the back that the work experience kid forgot to turn off?

There's a big difference between the sound an engine makes just spinning up freely and the sound it makes under load, so there wouldn't be a lot of point, beancounters notwithstanding.

Just use the one that’s under load to make the nice engine noise and the one that’s spinning up freely to drive the vehicle?

Seems like a waste when you could just drive around making Brum-Brum noises?

Instead of lumping a 100 kg engine in the back and having it running, would pd it not just be simpler to have a fk off big speaker in the car that makes engine running noises?
Weird thread is weird
