Why do people have such difficulty in the simple task of using car doors?

I'm particularly irritated by those who either slam the doors shut (cars are generally well made these days, the doors fit properly, so it's not necessary to force them back into place), or letting go of the handle and allowing the door to swing open, especially if the car is facing downhill, or the wind catches the door.

And the culprits, in my experience, are usually women.

Just keep hold of the handle, and don't let the door swing open! And don't slam it shut!

I think it's just a general lack of physical competence by some people rather than anything particularly related to the car. My father in law is a proper car door slammer, but the door in the house take as much or more of a beating as the ones on the car do.
At the opposite end of the spectrum, my own father is so obsessed with not slamming car doors it results in him having to repeatedly re-open and close the door because it's not shut properly at the first attempt.
It's interesting when they get into the same car and both are wincing (but not saying anything because they are too polite) about the others inability to shut car doors normally.

My MIL slams a car door like nothing you will have ever experienced. My Megane doors are enormous and weigh a ton, it honestly sends shivers down my spine when she slams them. I try to avoid having to drive her anywhere unless it's a matter of life and death now. She literally puts 100% effort into 'closing' them. The bang as the door meets the car is horrendous, she will never ever change.

My BIL has had the same experience with her, he called her out on it and said she should respect the car, she called him an idiot for thinking that way about a car.

laugh

Thankfully both of the daughters seem to have a little more decorum.

I have called out people a few times over the years for slamming my car doors too hard, girlfiriends, mates, co-workers.

Don't sit there in silence, tell them to take more care.

Yes, this is a thing.

In definitely more towards the soft-close side of things (meaning sometimes i don't ways achieve successful initial 'closure'.

When my little girl is asleep in the car, i have to use the eeeevvvverr so careful close 'on the latch' - then push the door itself to 'click' it shut.

I have a couple of mates like this. Sometimes takes 3 or 4 attempts to close the door properly. Just about as annoying as the slammers. Of which my missus is one. Really makes me wince sometimes. She's worst with the bootlid/ rear hatch.

A slap around the back of the head from my father cured me of slamming car doors shut when I was a youngster

Mrs PB presses on the frameless windows to shut our MINI's doors. That's going to cause an issue one day, but there's no telling her.

I also don't understand why we have fingerprints on the bottom of the bootlid. There are 2 handles inside it!

My other half has already been told not to use the glass to shut the door on my R56. I think she avoids getting in my car now biggrin

It's the same people that have no self awareness.

I have a relative I now won't have in the car for this reason. A serious family of car door slammers visits my neighbour every week, and it's usually when I'm in bed for night shift that they all arrive and clatter their doors repeatedly.

My other half used to do this. I found the cure was to buy a car that has a wing mirror that's slightly broken. If you close the door too hard, it moves. So I wind the window down and she has to adjust it back. It wasn't intentional but it worked!

Riiiiiiight up until she got in my other car. *SLAM*

BROKEN wing mirrors, no less. I have an ability to find the best looking, least functional cars going.

If I knew anyone who took 4 attempts to close a car door, I think that would bother me more.

Personally, as I walk away I back heel kick the door shut. If I’m in a taxi a round house kick the door shut. I find it brings a bit of joy when exiting a car.

Boot lids would be my gripe.

On our old Santa Fe, it's quite difficult to get it started coming down, but once it's on it's way it will close itself, but everyone seems to want to help it along as well, and boy does it slam closed then and when you are sitting in the drivers seat, you nearly get blown out the windscreen!

My way of closing it is to hold on to it till it is about 6 inches from closing and then let go, like a bonnet, still closes, but with a lot less noise and possiblity of damage.

My garage door is broken, due to constant slamming. But no one listens, I just get the death stare every time I shout "Gentle" after someone has slammed another door/drawer/bag on the table/fill in your pet hate.

P.S.

It's like turning a tap off. Do you:

A. Turn it till its's tight?
or
B. Turn it till the water stops running?

I'm a B kind of guy.

Surely, all the ‘gentlemen’ on here open and close the doors for their female passengers?
