Hi all, just looking for a bit of help.

Wall in question is a stud wall, comes with m8 coach bolts and ive just bought some 12mm nylon plugs, but from what ive read it seems like your best just screwing into the wood and not using wall plugs??

How is best to fix to the studs?

There is gaps between the studs and the alternative is to use gripit fixings in the cavity instead.

Tv weighs 30kg.

30Kg! how big is the TV?

I put a 50" (15Kg) on a stud wall with 2 heavy screws directly into the wooden studs on one side and the rest using cavity wall anchors. I used 8 wall anchors in total be sure and it's still on the wall a year later. I'd recommend getting the setting tool which helps with a neater job.

Something like this, get the right length for your wall thickness and get as big a diameter as possible,

If you don't find the studs you're relying on the plasterboard being securely affixed to wood behind and given the build quality of by 90s timber frame house that made me nervous.

What's behind the stud? are you able to go further into brick or blockwork? I'd recommend that, certainly if you're getting a mount which allows the TV to swing out.

I put a 75Kg mirror up using two of these wedge bolts goign into the blockwork behind the stud & insulation.

Needed to by a big ass drillbit though.

You'll probably struggle to find the studs, that or they'll be in the wrong place, just use some grip it fixings if you happen to hit a stud where you want to put the fixing then use some wood screws on that one.

Look at Geefix fasteners:

If you can pick up the studs you can just fix into those & it should be secure.

Can you pick up 1 stud or two? If it's two you'll probably be ok (note the weasel word).

If its just hanging the TV flat against the wall, you will get away with just fixing to the plasterboard.

However if its a arm type mount, you need some large wood screws through the wall into the stud work for at least 1-2 large screws somewhere along the top edge, and the lower edge below that because why not. 30kg hanging 2ft from the wall on a 1ft square mounting plate (typically sort of dims for these things) is pulling the top edge off the wall with 50kg of force. That the same as trying to hang a small human off the ceiling.

Lateral loading can be taking by the plasterboard and or wont end up with the TV on the floor even if it fails, that allows you to put it anywhere that gets a stud vertically thought the mounting plate somewhere. But if you miss all the studwork, while you might get aware with it, you are are at real risk of pulling a chunk of PB out of the wall if there is any length to the bracket/arm.

its going to be relatively flat to the wall, it allows for a 12 degree tilt but its not a arm that comes out just flat to the wall.

unfortunately the studs are in a bad place to use, im going for 4 grip it fixings as well as 2 expanding wall anchors, like i say tele is 25kg and only tilts on bracket slightly so not pulling much.

grip it are rated at max 93kg each

Well you might want to have a look at these before deciding on GripIt fixings:

If you are reaaly worried use either spring toggle fixings or the Geefix I linked to earlier.

Two thoughts.

1. Those GeeFix fixings look interesting, I’ve never seen those before.

2. I just spend quarter of an hour watching video reviews of plasterboard fixings nerd

I've used Gripit fixings for fitting telly's and shelves to plasterboard. Not had any problem with them. I think they're excellent. Just thought I'd throw in my tuppence.

managed to get it fitted eventually, i ended up with 3 gripit fixings (one was out of alignment), and 4 coach bolts in wall plugs drilled into the brickwork (didnt realise there was brickwork behind haha), pretty sure it aint moving now, made a right mess of the wall but you cant see luckily.

This of course assumes the wall is sound.

Good job.
