With the country split almost down the middle on Brexit and all of this talk of uniting the country what will sounding the bell do to help?

Remainers will see it as triumphalist and leavers will revel in it in front of remainers.

This won't help heal any wounds or bring the population together.

We're leaving, let it lie at that.

At an estimated cost of circa £500K for the bell to ring, someone's getting a big bonus!!

Well there are certainly some on here who could well benefit from a blast from or two from a bong
on any day of the year, let alone that particular day.

Is Bercow going to do it, it seems similar to his taxi costs

Large loudspeakers positioned at regular intervals along the south coast. At the appointed hour let off a 21 raspberry salute.

Playing devils advocate:

If I were French I'd retaliate by slowing down:

All the ports to UK ferries
The Eurotunnel

And I'd start secretly selling dinghys to the thousands of immigrants waiting at Calais to get across.

...that's Playing devils advocate biggrin

Did bells ring when we joined?

Seems a bad idea to me - utterly pointless.

We could get some fool on a zip wire waving the flag as well. That would be good.

Edit. Thinking about it, he mentioned the possibility of crowd funding, Sir Nige put him up to this?

I would agree. Far too jingoistic for my taste. We get out, get on with it and don’t make a fuss or upset the folks we are going to negotiate with for the coming years.

I'll go with that.

I shall just be glad to be out - and I hope it all works out well for our country as a whole.

I’ve decided to ps off to Benidorm to watch the festivities, it promises to be astounding entertainment whatever your opinion on Brexit.

There is also the added thrill of seeing what happens in the first few days.

I may or may not survive...

I'd favour a samba band drumming the skulls of immigrants snaking its way around parliament square.
