Brilliant advert.

As for Big Ben Bonging just put a decent festival quality sound system up on the scaffolding, play a recording, nobody will be any the wiser, £490,000 saved.

Bongs for sure, this is something to celebrate, we are finally independent. Ask yourself what other country would not celebrate.

I'm thinking fireworks and possibly a yearly bank holiday to remember the fight against an external financial power trying to derail democracy that lost.

Its something to be proud of.

We're getting blue passports...and now bells. Makes me wonder why I ever supported Remain in the first place.

With the country split almost down the middle on Brexit and all of this talk of uniting the country what will sounding the bell do to help?

Remainers will see it as triumphalist and leavers will revel in it in front of remainers.

This won't help heal any wounds or bring the population together.

We're leaving, let it lie at that.
Boris uniting the country. So far, a knighthood for IDS, one of the most divisive politicians of recent years. JR-M in a position of power, another very divisive politician. Now millions spent on a celebration of something millions of people don't want, that will be happening anyway.

Way to go Boris. clap

Edit. Thinking about it, he mentioned the possibility of crowd funding, Sir Nige put him up to this?

We could ask remainers to divert their payments from Steve Bray, who is no longer braying smile

Trouble is around half the population don't agree with that assessment of Brexit, and might see spending half a million quid to rub the noses of our friends and neighbours in it might be construed as a little bit crass.

It just seems like a gesture designed to alienate and divide the population further

Surely the point would be to do something different to the last 27yrs to mark the occasion? biggrin

(Half a million? No. Should something be done? Pretty big moment in our history, correcting a quarter century old faux pas, so would be worth something... Don't see why big speakers couldn't be put around Westminster. Maybe a big party on the bit where the megaphone remain jockey used to be...?smile)

I'm an ardent leaver and see nothing of value in this at all.

It's a divisive waste of money. Triumphalist nonsense. Remember there were 48% of those that voted, voted to Remain. This is stupidity stirred up by the uneducated and unwashed. Have some humility.

I get what your saying but I think judging by the last election results there is a strong majority who want to leave. I think as long as its not a "fk you we won!" celebration it could be good. My view is that Its time to look forward and change our ways for the better, start to believe in ourselves (The UK) again and forget all this self flagellation we have been wallowing in for years and do things that are dynamic. Lets just celebrate that.

Moreover, highlight the new beginnings of relationships with the other European nations.

I'm shocked that it made the news at all.

Elizabeth Tower, and the clock inside it, are undergoing maintenance. The large bell known as Big Ben housed inside the tower isn't in use at the moment. It's a non-story.

My bathroom will likely be in disarray at the time of our exit from the European Union. Do I demand that the plumber re-fits my toilet for the day so that I can take a massive celebratory/commiseratory* (delete as appropriate) dump in it at the moment the town crier reads out the proclamation?

Such a lot of nonsense. Nothing will change on the day, either. It's bureaucracy, it will take months before anything changes, if it changes at all. The vote was taken, discussions were had, decisions made, and yet the world still turns and the sun rises every morning, just as it always did. This is just the media keeping the snowball rolling on a story they're kidding themselves matters to the average bloke in the street. Just like the Harry/Sparkles saga really. No-one I've spoken to recently has even brought that subject up, but it's been the lead story, and what feels like 50% of the news content since their announcement, so no, not "everyone" is talking about it. Much like "to BONG or not to BONG?" really. I'm not sure the ringing of a bell in Westminster even crossed the minds of Derek and Phyllis from Leatherhead as they tucked into their boiled beef and cabbage last evening...

Don't know him. But if any loot is raised form some lottery or another, what with the state of other stuff, I would rather the loot went to a good cause than continue division with a bell.

Think we should get every bell and a mandatory day off work tbh. Unless it's a pub, it must close the day we celebrate independence.

Its a stupid idea.

Anyway on the morning of the 1st of February both remainers and leavers will probably say ‘look nothings changed’, and they will both be correct this will rumble on for years
