Agreed, though some also appear to think their opinions are more valid.
Yeah sure, but I think that's true of sorts on PH as well! biggrin

I subscribe to this point of view.

There's a recent podcast on dolly parton (dolly partons America) which is quite an interesting listen even if you have little interest in her music. Episode 4 goes quite deep into how she's (and you realise how clever the mind behind the simple southern girl is here) stayed out of politics even though many have tried to drag her down.

I think our sensitivity is changing though. I've never bought into the whole right-is-evil nonsense but we go to a lot of gigs etc including punk, post punk and whatnot. Now, I've always rolled my eyes a bit at people who complain of political content - it's just part of what is - but these last couple of years I'm increasing finding politic quite exasperating. Especially when bands whose work is very clever and open to interpretation, encouraging thought and certainly not feeding you the answers, feel the need to supplant with some hackneyed anti right rhetoric, feeding the dumb sheep.

I find also public figures are coming across as having a deep sense of entitlement to tell you what-is. For instance we saw bill bailey the other year, expecting comedy, but instead got 2 boring hours of mostly sneering at brexit. Not funny at all, I thought it was sh!t, my wife, who was furious at how the vote went, thought it was sh!t. We just think he's a now, we put on one of his old dvds to remember better times but just couldn't.

I guess I could be turning into a grumpy old man but I'm getting more and more pissed off with hearing about the political opinions of stars.

Patrick fecking Stewart and his blathering on about Brexit and BoJo, ditto prosie user Hugh Grant with (pretty much) identikit views, lilly allen and St fking bono.
Then you have Ted Nugent returning the favour for the (loony?) right along with the talent black-hole that is Morrissey.

Seriously guys I pay money to be entertained by you, not to listen to you dribble on about whatever "worthy" cause you feel the need to preach about this time. Why don't you go back to entertaining and keep your fking opinions to yourselves?

Am I alone in feeling this way?
Why is Lily Allen in your list? She shares your opinion.

Lily is "Sick to death of luvvies like a Lawrence (sic) Fox going on TV and forcing their opinions on everybody else, when he’ll never have to deal with what normal people have to deal with in his gated community.”.

(I would, however, like to know why there are ordinary people in Laurence's gated community. Is that where the refugees that are not living in Lily's houses have been accommodated? smile)

Does anyone have celebrities that they like (when doing their thing like music or film) but dislike their real world opinions or personalities?

I.e. like enjoy listening to a band but think the lead singer spouts a load of annoying tosh?

I quite like U2 but think bono is a plonker same with Clarkson, enjoy his documentaries but think he’s a fanny. I can’t think of many others.

Does an annoying celebrity on twitter or in interview, make it hard to enjoy their acting/singing/presenting etc?

Mick Hucknall.

I love Simply Red, seen them over 20 times, he's a fantastic singer.....

But pro Euro/Labour and a Manchester United fan so he's a T**t.

So it's OK for us commoners to hold and discuss political views, but it's annoying when 'celebs' do it? Seems rather strange doesn't it?
Not really. Not when 'discussing it' goes beyond your living room or pub and extends to a platform not accessible by 'commoners'.
Perhaps in the name of impartiality when they put a celebrity on TV to espouse their opinions they should give equal time to a John Smith off the street.

Michael Rosen is a great broadcaster but holds offensive political opinions.

Thats not really how the media works. If you aren't interested in what people who are on tv are saying, turn it off. If you are interested in what Jonh Smith has to say, go and ask him. Nothing can change but you

Rubbish.
The media puts these people on pedestals where the thin air messes with their brain cells and makes them think their views matter.
What the galloping fuxk did Lily Allen have to do with Grenfell Tower?
Absolutely nothing other than she lives in the same area and yet in the days folllowing the fire she popped up time and time again, spouting the same garbage. Once is enough, then get her off, just like everyone else.
And Jamie Oliver now gets referred to as “celebrity chef and school dinners campaigner” when the caption should just read “Cooks a bit”

That platform is accessed on a daily basis, with local news and the likes of vicky derbyshire.

I think the nub of it, is that "stars" or "influencial" people's opinions are as valid as anyone elses, but not more so. If they think they are, they are wrong. What is true, is that their feelings will be skewed by their life experience which will not be typical as most people's so one could argue their opinion is less relevant.

But what REALLY gets up the noses of the masses, is the hypocrisy of many of these people. There's hundreds of examples of it, from the likes of Lilly Allen, Bob the Nob, Bonio, endless politicians, Emma ttshom, etc etc. Do as I say, not as I do.

But that feeling is the same as less famous and celebrity people too, it's just they don't get themselves in the papers so much!!

30+ years of gig going and only ever walked out of one.

Kate Tempest.

I rarely listen to lyrics, considering the voice to be another instrument instead.

Quite enjoyed a couple of her tunes on the radio but I let any message drift over my head.

She spent more time moaning between songs than performing so I left and went to the pub.

These people are entertainers and I want entertaining, especially if it has cost me money.

Have whatever opinion you want but I don’t want to hear about, especially on my coin.

Absolutely this. But given they live in a bubble surrounded by like minded sychophants, they believe their opinion is worth more. Not to mention any deviation from the expected views will bring for the wrath of the modern day puritans.

RW PHers on NP&E froth at the mouth at celebs espousing left wing views. What a shocker.

That said, whenever I hear celebs doing politics I can’t help but think of Team America: World Police!

Thats exactly what I mean. Thats what the media does, it uses people that will make other people buy newspapers, click links etc. Its a business, and it won't change. The thing you can change is whether or not you ignore it

As has been said Joe Bloggs or Currently Famous for Singing a catchy tune, are both entitled to opinions and both as equally valid. For me its the lecturing from those starts, Bono a prime candidate during live 8, when they are tax avoiding, private jet flying ferrari driving etc. I am happy for them to do all those things but then don't ask me to donate, don't tell me to fly less, don't tell me to use public transport.

Lilly Allen did not pay her tax bill, yet said we should help others more - maybe if she paid her way the country would be better?.

Gretta (not a star but now famous) is riding on carbon boats and going to the UN where as most teenagers are working a Saturday job an wondering what will happen if they don't get good GCSE's etc.

Being self righteous is to an extent a luxury of the rich, most people have to just get on with st an don't need the likes of Lilly Allen telling them how to live. Now Stormzy I believe has funded some university places that is great but really perhaps take a leaf out of Gerorge Michaels book, give autonomously don't court the publicity stick to singing

I think Lily Allen's self-awareness-ometer may be overdue a service...
