One thing for sure - the remoaners can make no noise about it, seeing as the EU parliament is split between Brussels, Strasbourg and Luxembourg City.

Personally I think it is a cracking idea, as it means the rabid Scottish Nationalists will have to come up with a new euphemism instead of 'Wastemonster'.

Ironing how you seem unimpressed with “wastemonster” but happy to bore get another thread with “remoaner”

Would be interesting to see the economic impact

795 lords.

  • A big building with €100m's of construction, upkeep, etc. Short term local +ve to economy
  • They don't visit every day, and I'm guessing York would force many to stay overnight. So a direct upside to an already buoyant hotel market. The Grand would probably be commandeered...
  • Upside to local spend - lunch, dinners, bars
  • Multiplying effect from lobbyists, etc visiting the Lords
  • 450 staff reference and all of their salaries would be spent locally. Not everyone would relocate, so some local (skilled) job creation
etc

It's a symbolic gesture from the 'people's government'.

Personally i'd rather see it scrapped all together.
Be careful. The House of Lords is one of the few checks we have against a Hitler style 'enabling act'.

Although their power of veto is much reduced they still have the ability to veto an 'act of self perpetuation' by the lower house.
Agreed, a second house gives us the checks and balances we need. The current make up isn't ideal but it's better than nothing.

In general there isn't much to do around there so this is really good for the northern people to go and watch the House of Lords, LIVE!
Sticking ferrets down trousers, racing whippets & pigeons and hanging monkeys are likely to remain the dominant passtimes.

So why not do it somewhere which would actually properly benefit the area? York is already relatively affluent. This wont make a huge difference to the local economy as it would in somewhere like Bradford for example.

It would be more interesting if The House of York moved to Lords.

Cut it down to 100 people and move it outside of London would be my preference.

Yes please.

Just bought some property in central York at the end of last year, this would do nicely.

Power to the people !

I hear Commons has to go on tour as well. Superb...
Well this dinosaur went on tour and it was a roaring success -

Rubbish. Palaeontologists have no idea what sort of noise a sauropod might have made.

It would get knicked and burned out before they finished it.

Any time a headline says "could" or "may" you can safely ignore it. Won't happen.

I can see a lot of good in moving *both* houses somewhere cheaper that would benefit from the income though.

At least they’d understand what the real U.K. is outside of the affluent areas of London hehe

I remember standing in front of Dippy having just been told it was a plaster cast. I was about 10. I was distraught.

Where was/is the contingency for (non nuclear) war time? I seem to remember that Harrogate was a candidate for the cabinet, etc

Birmingham NEC could have the "Government Section" added in? Sort of middle of the country, don't think there is enough rental space at Meridan.

Stick them in the Conference suite at a Travelodge oop North.

See how many of the freeloaders bother to show up.

Sack any that don't have >75% attendance.

Would have been interesting to see the hand wringing if PM Corbyn had been proposing this idea.

Fortunately we will never see that in this multiverse.
