I’m going out on my SUP for a downwinder this weekend. I’ll be taking all sorts of safety precautions but will obviously still be at the mercy of my kit. Should the worst happen and by chance I survive, I’ll be sure to kill myself so it doesn’t happen again

That has come up before. To the right of that is a high rock outcrop that prevents the waves getting to the area were the people are. Quite safe.

Edit. The waves are crashing up on the pier, the base of which does go down to the low tide level meaning the swell at full tide, what 8-10 meters is battering the pier, that is another 50+ meters or so further away. Spectacular though, I think the best shots are taken at a distance.

But the people were presumably told to stay indoors as there was a storm about. They don't have the competence to judge that it is safe there without years of training. Therefore all are morons that are putting rescuers lives in danger and should be shot.

Git a link? Love to see what they say. tide is around 8 meters today, a 10 meter tide would probably have more respect in that area with a full onshore blow. The white tower is a National Coast Watch and the RNLI station is further to the left.

I’m surprised, the Audi in front especially, made it through ok. Looks like it’s making a big old bow wave by going through so fast.

ETA maybe the levels are changing as the water rebounds off the buildings in the narrow street?

In summary, a Big Wave surfer was caught out in Nazare and took a massive pounding and needed rescue and emergency medical care.

The bloke’s a hero to me but presumably there’s no difference between him and the bloke in the OP really?

One bloke is a pro surfer injured during a competition where there’s plenty of support staff present the other is a bloke that went out on his own in a storm.

In further news, the Home Secretary Priti Patel today announced that a warrant has been issued for the arrest of notorious 1980s motorcycle hooligan Eddie Kidd. It has been suggested by The Rt Hon Matt Hancock MP, Her Majesty's Principal Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, that they may pursue Mr Kidd for repayment of the cost of any and all NHS treatment and care he has received for a brain injury, sustained during an ill-advised willy-waving motorcycle stunt that went badly wrong. The young racing driver Billy monger could also soon find himself in the firing line, with sources close to the CPS saying they were weighing up new evidence which suggests that Mr monger, who tragically lost his legs in a Formula 4 crash, may well "have brought the whole sorry incident on himself" by "driving way too fast", and endangered volunteer marshals and rescue crews in the process...



What next? Arresting the British Army en masse when they get into a bit of bother on an adventurous training exercise? Oh well. It seems that massed ranks of PHers are now more than happy to defect into the wishy-washy do-gooder "if it saves just one life" camp. Good luck to you all in your sterile, joyless, fully automated risk-free world of misery. I shall look back on my experiences of caving, coasteering, surf kayaking, abseiling, climbing, and "tombstoning" off bridges in Yorkshire and the Lake District, among other things, with great fondness, and ruminate on the irony of having faced danger at work and at play for over 25 years and then smashed my leg to pieces falling down the stairs at home.

ETA: In 2018, 128 people died in coastal waters around the UK. Around 55% of those, according to the RNLI, were people who "ended up in the water unexpectedly" such as runners and walkers on coastal paths. 15 died swimming, and 13 died SCUBA diving.
