This incident has presented three protagonists who need good, hard, boots to their balls.
1- the OP for the thread title
2 - the poster Schmed for obvious reasons
3. - the Tesco van driver.
4 - militant cyclists. A crazed band of suicidal zealots who need to be restrained for their own safety.1- the OP for the thread title

Yes, everyone blames the van driver, but there's also a few comments about how the cyclist should have done more to protect himself and predict what was going to happen. The implication is that some people think there was something he could have done differently to avoid the incedent.
I can't speak for anyone other than myself, but IMO, looking for the tiny clues that could have allowed victim X to avoid idiot Y is the only real reason for even bothering to watch video clips like this.blade runner said:
He's apparently supposed to be regularly checking behind him while at the same time presumably also looking ahead and judging increases and decreases in other vehicles speed, predicting what the vehicle that just passed him might/might not decide to do.
I make no claims to be any form of driving deity, but the description you've given above is, to me, an excellent summary of the sort of driver (and cyclist) I aspire to be.We might as well forget the concept of blame all together. To me, the only interesting question is "could the cyclist possibly have predicted or avoided this". For some people the answer, apparently, is "no". Which is fine. Although, I find that rather defeatist.
Looks like a case of "Oh! That's the road I want!!" judging by the entry and at that point, everything else was forgotten about.
I wonder, too, if the driver did scan the mirror (unlikely) whether the blue top of the rider blended in with the blue cycle lane..
Anyway, the driving on display is terrible, as are the comments labeling that vehicle a truck
