"Oxford Brookes doing worse than University of Oxford on state school admissions

Figures published by the Higher Education Statistics Agency reveal that Oxford Brookes University admitted a higher proportion of privately educated undergraduates than most other UK universities, and more than some highly selective institutions such as the London School of Economics."

https://www.theguardian.com/education/2020/feb/13/...

Are people really that desperate to want to say they went to Oxford, they go to Brookes and hope no one picks up on it?

"Where did you do"?

"Oxford Brookes

I saw a CV with a claimed Oxford University on it a few years back. The applicant continually harped on about her education and how she was selected for Oxford. The certificate stated Oxford Brookes hehe

So yes, some people are desperate for the Oxford name and hope employers don’t realise it was a polytech.

Jeffrey Archer being a classic example, who refers warmly to his university days 'in Oxford'

No need to be embarrassed about Oxford Brookes, it’s widely recognised as being one of the best of its kind in the world.
Oh by the way, it’s not a polytechnic.
It’s a University.

Er Brooks is 51st in the UK, approximately 49 places below Oxford propper.
People should be embarrassed if they get called out trying to pass off that they attended a vastly superior university in the same place

Most people I know, usually state what college they went to at Oxford, IME. Usually the first question I ask if someone states they went to University in Oxford.

Jesus, btw, but I dropped out! wink

No different to Angela Ruskin in Cambridge really.

Sounds good and better than I ever achieved with my 3 GCSE passes.

Though I'm immensely proud of my eldest daughter who is in her third year at Gonville & Caius college.

People should be embarrassed making a special post on a public forum to point out a spelling mistake, get a life

You made a special post on a public forum to point out that people should be embarrassed about something, then told me to get a life for exactly the same thing. Can you spell hypocrisy? We already know you can't spell proper.

Even back in the mid 1980s there were a lot of very wealthy students from some very expensive schools attending OxPoly as it was then called.

The parents, and students, were very keen for Oxford to be on the CV.

I can only imagine the number that subsequently had their degree certificate changed to Oxford Brookes University smile

Does that mean that if someone went to Oxford Brookes they aren't as clever as someone who went to Oxford proper? Or that they wont be as good at a job?

I went to private school and a few went to Oxford just for the name, but I imagine it is a good city as well.

I went to Sheffield* so can't really comment.

What on Earth are you on about this time?
Do you understand the difference between trying to pass yourself off as having gone to a much better university than you actually had, and making a typo on a mobile phone? Can you see that these are different things or not?

Does one of the very best universities in the world have a higher caliber of student and enable greater career sucess than a middle of the table one? I’d imagine generally yes. I said ‘generally’

Although they may not be better at a job just by having an outstanding education, they may just be very fking intelligent and hard working and that’s how they beat the massive competition to get their place at such an elite uni.

Go on, tell us all about Diane Abbott and some other losers who you’ve preemptively Googled having attended Oxbridge now, there’s always some exceptions that prove the rule.

When I flunked my A levels back in the early 80s, I received an unsolicited invitation to go to Cambridge College of Arts and Technology
Tempting, eh!
...er......no!
Needless to say, I stuck with my duffers low choice, had lots of fun, got a 2:1 and stumbled on through life hehe

Less ambitious university snobs end up at "Warwick" which is actually in Coventry.

As per earlier replies, not necessarily, but very probably in academic terms.

The Universities of Oxford and Cambridge want to admit the very best academic students from all quarters, and tend to do so.

If a student is the most academically gifted polymath in their school's sixth-form but they're totally set on a course that Oxford Brookes offers but the University of Oxford doesn't, they may well choose Oxford Brookes. They'll still be as academically gifted as they would have been at the University of Oxford.

That sort of difficult choice outcome doesn't happen often in my experience and It might not help long-term with career progression, or it might, depending on the course and their results.
