Hi all

Just bought tickets for Flying Legends in July for myself and my young son (10), anyone been, any tips for the day?

Interestingly the choice was either RIAT, fast jets etc., or warbirds and his choice was most definitely warbirds which meets my approval.

Duxford is big, but see if you can squeeze in the tank museum. Take the train if you see it; saves walking! Oh and take your own food/drink as it will save time and cost.

In our experience (past 12 years or so) If it’s sunny, you can get very, very sunburnt, if it rains you get soaked - there’s very little shelter if you’re watching the display.

Take lightweight folding chairs to save your legs, if it’s hot, take loads of water and suntan cream, and wear hats. Food is expensive, so take your own in rucksacks.

Try to get near the flight line fence at one end of the runway or the other for the display - you’ll see aircraft taxiing close up. Don’t worry if there are a load of photographers in the way - they’re just one of the things you have to put up with. If your son asks nicely, they’ll probably let him squeeze right to the front anyway.

Get there early, do the flight line walk, and at least go in all the hangers even if it’s a quick walk through. It’s invariably a great day out.

Thanks and more replies please smile

I didn’t mention I’ve paid a little more than a normal ticket, parking is right there next to the flight line and food/drink is supplied all day (albeit I’m driving!)

I understand a flight line walk is also included along with the package which we are both really looking forward to yes

If it’s the Gold Pass enclosure you’ve got, I think you have to buy the food and drinks, so it could get expensive? We considered it last year, but in the end it seemed a bit steep for what you got. Private bogs would be nice though must admit...

I'm sure we will.

I was really pleased my 10 year old was more interested in watching piston rather than jets. He has a 1/24 Airfix Hurricane hanging in his bedroom I made some years ago and it's his favourite of the lot.

Might still be worth going up to the flight line for some of the displays - if it's the balcony I'm thinking of, it's quite a way back - on the AirSpace hangar?

You may well be right yes

The balcony on the airspace hanger looks enclosed on google maps, not sure if that's the one or not shown on the info from the event company?

Regardless, will be a great day (with decent toilets hehe ) a half decent view and clsoe parking etc.

Assuming we get there, we usually do exactly the same routine (up to and including sitting under the same tree for lunch) every year hehe . We watch from the end of the flight line pretty much in front of that balcony. If you see 6 people mooning at you, that'll be us. Toilet envy is a terrible thing.

Probably obvious but get there early doors as traffic in the local area is awful. Took us roughly 2 hours to do approx 4 miles last year. Enjoy.

There are two balconies at the front of the AirSpace hangar. Looking at it from the concrete apron, the left balcony is enclosed, the right is open but probably gives good protection from wind and rain.

Edit:

OP, if your lad enjoys his day at Duxford, take him to a show at Old Warden.
