Why is it that whenever there's a story in the media of a woman having been raped, people accuse her of having made it up for attention.

Can anyone give me an example of a case where a woman has been raped and then found a way to profit off the resulting media attention/build a career? I'm genuinely curious.
Some men like to take the 0.00000001% of allegations that turn out to be false and then use that to denounce every allegation that's made. There is a word for it beginning with M and ending in Y.

Did no one notice her missing? Family, friends etc?

Surely this would have hit the news when she was missing? News blackout? Ransom paid?

What an odd story
Not necessarily, we don't know when it happened but after her first couple of hits she dropped off the music scene as her follow on album wasn't as popular. So not impossible as there was little media interest in her career that this could have happened without many in the media noticing .
Sadly the rape side of it, i can see, but going missing and being held captive / kidnapped..? That is pretty intense stuff. As mentioned earlier , there was the completely unknown model who had a similar experience and it was all over the news.

There is an industry of abuse stories being written. Urika Johnson wrote she was raped in her Autobiography, people were accused, it got a lot of publicity.

I think Katie Price said she has been raped a few times as well.

There are unfortunately people who use events like this for self promotion that is why people will always be slightly cynical.

That might have something to do with the fact that it was reported upon receipt of a ransom note.

True, but at least he hasn't suggested she's making it all up for publicity.
No, he's left that to others

There's a large contingent on here who seem to hate women.

It's really strange.

Yes, it would be so much better for everyone if these people being raped kept quiet about it and didn't cause a fuss...

They're damned if they say anything, and damned if they keep silent

My guess would be that it was a partner of hers at the time. Kidnapping could be simply she wasn't allowed to leave the house, rape could easily be unwanted sex from a partner and drugged...I guess that would be easy if the victim and abuser lived together.

It might also explain why it was never reported. Domestic abuse/violence often goes unreported and in fact people may not even realize they were victims until some time later.

there are obviously ways to about it. As I mentioned UJ put it in a book that led to a lot of attention. Rape is horrible but profiting off the back of it isn't really great as it ends up sending a very mixed message.

'Ive been raped, read all about it in full details in TV quick.'

We don't know the full story yet so it is open to speculation.

Maybe, I was thinking it may have been something with a news blackout as a ransom of something was paid. But you may be right and it may have been donkeys ago so was not a "kidnap" in the same sense.

Will be interesting to see if more comes out about it.

I know it’s only a guess but if it were that it’d be pretty straight forward to make a complaint to the police who’d arrest, question and charge ( or not)

To date that’s not happened.

I wonder why?

I believe her partner at the time was a Welsh international rugby player so it could get interesting. According to my missus who grew up not far from Nethyn so naturally knows all the Duffy gossip, the accepted story was that it was their split which caused her to become a recluse and brought on her depression.

There is also many grey areas where claims can be made but other parties have different interpretations.

Some see the headline and picture someone abducted and tied to a radiator. As already mentioned it could be an ex partner not letting them out of the house. Quite a while back there was rumoured to be some British female celebrities doing high end escort work in the ME and something like that could start out entirely consensual and then become something different.

Without the full details it is impossible to say what exactly went on.

I’d just like to register my astonishment at how this discussion has played out. Quite amazed how many have solved the crime, or decided it’s a work of fiction, drifted onto another case and got that completely wrong, or decided that celebrities are basically just prostitutes and deserve all they get.

Quite astonishing how some people think.

Unfortunately it’s pretty much nailed on that it would have turned out this way on this forum

The thing I can't work out is if your mother or sister told you that this had happened to them at some point in the past how many of the people on this thread would say "Sorry Mum I don't believe you".

I don't get what happens to someone to make them think like this confused
