PHers are a practical bunch in general, and there are loads of threads with folks making huge modifications to their cars and bikes. I've noticed that this is also the case with regard to watches, and there a fair few amateur watchmakers on these pages who enjoy tinkering, albeit at a much smaller scale.

There's been a few nicely modified watches in recent threads, but I'd like to have a thread dedicated to peoples non standard watches, either modifications of existing watches or scratch builds, buying a selection of bits and putting it all together.

So please - show us what you have, any details you can give in terms of starting point and which bits were used will be helpful for others who want to go down that path. I've started and it's hugely satisfying.

I have a couple of projects on the go right now, but the first one I finished is this, and it's probably my favourite watch in my collection.

Seiko SNLK09. Bought as someone's modification project that went wrong, so I only used the case and bracelet. Cost c. £19.

To this I added:

New Seiko NH35 movement £30
Domed sapphire crystal (£10 - brand name Minging (yes really))
Explorer 1 dial and Benz hands from Rafflestime £25.

For a total of well under £100 I have a brilliant and reliable watch that shroud last me for ages.

Let's see what you have smile

None yet for me but I have bought all the tools and am planning to do a Seiko SKX project at some point.

Just need to find a donor watch that does not cost the earth - which is not easy.

Dave.

Isn’t that just a negative display? YouTube tells you how to do it

Yeah, but i have the finesse of a newborn elephant & the patience of a 5yr old... I'm bound to break it!

Plus if I end up buying the whole watch I can just swap them over & have another watch. biggrin

SKX007. I changed the crystal, bezel insert
& bracelet. Bought the tools I needed & had a go. Nothing too awkward.

Based on a Bliger case, then I added an NH movement, Seiko dial & hands and an aftermarket strap.

Seiko snk mod......watch was very kindly gifted to me by a fellow PHer.

Dial feet had become detached so dial had spun....perfect candidate for a mod.

Domed crystal dial and hand swap polished case.

That's really nice. Will look into that. Thanks for posting. May I ask where the dial was obtained.

Nice work. Most of the bliger /parnis cases are made for Miyota or ET clones. Was there anything special you needed to do to get the NH35 to fit in there?

Thanks. Dial and hands are the work of Rafflestime - I used his eBay shop. Do a search for Seiko explorer dial and you're bound to find his shop pretty soon. Excellent quality for the price and a massive variety.

An unconventional, but cheaper approach could be to use an SKX homage (sold by Sharkey on ALiexpress). Identical case to the skx and comes with an nh36 rather than 7s26 movement - one less thing to change later on.

Maybe something to consider if you're going to change it fairly extensively?

Agree

Just one thing though

I believe the early ones were 1:1 seiko so skx mod parts fit.

There was a later run that were dimensionally different.

Apparently the latest are back to standard seiko dimensions? ??

Crowns are different on all so you have no options on swapping on skx mod crowns.

Nope, if you get a 40mm case the standard grey NH36 spacer fits perfect. You can even reuse the bliger crown on the NH stem. You will need to cut this down however!

Seiko SKX31, new chapter ring, crystal and bezel insert.

Bought this as a total piece of junk, restored it and turned it into if Seiko made a Kermit.

Not sure whether this should come under the category of modded or devalued. It’s a second series Steinhart OVM with the grey dial. Said dial was lighter in reality than in photos and I never took to it. Found this dial and hand combination for the ETA movement and Joe at Anglesey watches did a fantastic job of fitting them for me.
I’m much happier with it now, and wear it on a regular basis.
It’s on an Erikas Originals black ops strap which I find extremely comfortable.
Often wondered why Steinhart haven’t done versions of the Ocean One with snowflake hands/dials.
