Its very dangerous if you don't turn right, like the Anthony Davidson Toyota -v- Ferrari crash

But no, they've enlarged the run-off area on the straight bit confused

To be fair if you're going to try and catch someone hitting the end of Les Hunaudières and finding they have no brakes you're looking at a gravel trap most of the way to the centre of Mulsanne village!

Most incidents are people just slightly over-cooking it so not quite making the turn and currently slipping off in to the gravel trap RIGHT in the firing line for the next car to do the same thing, which if you've over-cooked it due to being the first one to find some fresh damp/oil will probably be the next car down Les Hunaudières. And if you ARE able to escape on your own you rejoin at the exact point cars on the racing line (that you as the recovering car can't see due the the corner) are looking to hit the exit curb. Currently that means throwing a slow zone in sector 5 so the car can recover/be recovered.

I don't do Facebook so can't see any latest pics. of what they've actually done but the idea was to not make the corner easier with F1-style miles of tarmac run-off, but to extend the current gravel trap/run off area so over-cooking drivers have a chance to straighten up, drive through the trap, and further alone towards Courbe du Golf and a safer rejoin point.

my sources are telling me no changes to the camping, yet!
From what I have seen, apart from the track change, the viewing bank will be different, maybe further back and stepped.
This would only really change the positions of the loos and showers and maybe where the Danes set up their mega pitch

Or if you're NOT Ant Davidson: Check you have space to overtake that GTE Ferarri before the corner, or should leave it and just take him on the run to Courbe du Golf with a squirt of hybrid power, brake hard at appropreate point, tighten butt cheeks, etc.

Translations of captions...

Significant work is underway at the Mulsanne bend, at the end of the Hunaudières. The work begins about 200 meters from the famous bend.

On the right, a bituminous surface will be applied until the bend.

It will be the same on the left, up to the roundabout, while the track is already covered with a new layer of asphalt.

The previous kerb, at the end of the straight line and inside the turn, has been removed and it is now a larger kerb, 40 meters long, which will border the track until the entrance to the turn.

The concrete slabs that form this kerb are 12 centimeters high and, with the new layer of asphalt making 5 centimeters, the top of the kerb will therefore be 7 centimeters above the track. This kerb being quite aggressive, it will certainly be prudent not to climb it too often otherwise the tires will suffer.

The site does not only concern the entrance to the bend and the kerb. Outside the bend, the old gravel trap is being removed and will be replaced by a new, larger and longer trap, downstream of the old one.

Consequently, the spectator hill is moved back.

Once all these works are completed, it will obviously remain to install the safety barriers.

So I take it that's an area of tarmac on each side of the corner, so if you come down to Mulsanne and someone infront of you does 'something silly' you can cut left/right to avoid but still be on something sticky so your brakes will work, But by god that's a "Are you SURE you want to try cutting this corner, sir...?" curb isn't it biggrin

The "rickety old barn" is a listed building. I was there today and it is still somewhat confusing as to what the racing line is going to be. It looked the other day as if the green and white posts on the inside have been removed and that racing would be right up to the tyre wall on the inside, but don't take this as gospel. I've stood on the inside all and still can't really make out what they are doing. The camps site is unaffected, but the descent of the spectator banking has been removed and the netting is higher up, closer to the cars but less viewing space it looks like. You'll have photos when all is finished.

ETA:- "rickety old barn"? Do you mean the lorry weighbridge just after the bend? Or the rickety house on the corner?

Here are updated photos of Mulsanne bend taken this afternoon.

1.This looking at the bend from about 30 yds. I am standing in the middle of the road with both lanes of traffic on my left. You can see the new rumble strip on the right and the new gravel trap straight ahead.

2.I've moved to the right so inside the rumble strip. You can see the holes where they will put the green and white posts.

3.Now it gets puzzling. I've moved to the left and there is a small gravel trap on the left of the racing line.

4. I've moved nearer the bend looking back up the Mulsanne so you can see the racing line on the left, the strange gravel trap and the rumble strips.

5. Looking back at the rumble strips. They are bloody vicious.

6. I've now gone round the bend (no comments!) standing on the wall of the golf club, looking back at the bend.

7. Same spot, but looking across at the trap, the tyre wall and the new spectator fencing.

8. I've gone 100 yds or so to the entrance of the golf club. Trap, tyre wall and spectator fence.
