A friend is making a killing on these - making them in designer fabric and selling them on Etsy / Facebook / local shops etc

Doesn’t wear one herself of course biggrin
Masks are now mandatory everywhere except your desk at my wife's work.

Needless to say she doesn't like the standard issue black mask and is looking for an alternative

How about this one... not just a bloody good band, but I think this is subtle. Almost tempted myself. Almost.

That will help us spot and avoid idiots.

Masks are worn to prevent you from spreading infections and they are quite effective at that. You only need to look at the low infection rates in Japan or South Korea where mask use is common.

I don't just mean from SARS-COV-2 but from other fluid borne viruses like influenza. Flu rates in the UK would drop significantly if people wore masks if they were showing symptoms.

Ex partner works at the local hospital, she told me that all minor ops including removal of malignant melanomas etc are being transferred to some village health centres as the hospital is still on covid watch.
Presumably we will end up having our ops done by a witch doctor down a back alley if this carries in much longer.

On a more humorous note I saw a car the other day replete with full Faux emergency livery and key worker printed all over the doors and boot!

As others have said, some people have loved this supposed crisis.

One of the nurses I was chatting to over the weekend told me they were installing very expensive air-extraction systems in the theatres - intended to remove every bit air in-between patient operations. I'd imagine that along with the cost these will slow things down massively. I'll admit to not knowing the real dangers of airborne transmissions in such a place, but she definitely saw it as bordering on madness/complete overkill.

On another note, got shouted at like I was a recalcitrant five year old in WHSmith yesterday. hehe Walked in through the 'ENTER ONLY" door (right next to the "EXIT ONLY" door - I'm always tempted to do a Led Zep with these) and headed for the internal post office bit. Woman assistant must have asked me something but I didn't hear her. Next thing, in full-on survival mode, she's shouting at me like a stern school teacher. "WHERE ARE YOU GOING - SHOP OR POST OFFICE?" "Post office," I replied. "Right then," she tutted angrily, "proceed." Proceed? WTF. I might have found it somewhat erotic if she was wearing a rather sexy-but-stern outfit, but she looked like a refugee from Poundland. I wouldn't mind but the store was empty apart from one person at the post office counter.

I've had issues (like magazine issues, hehe) here before. Being told "you can't browse, just buy what you want and leave" type stuff... even when looking for a new paperback, then getting 'checked-on' every couple of minutes ("have you found what you are looking for - you can't browse here, you know").

I'll find another post office in future, I think.
I've had the same this week, shared on another thread.....

- Got shouted at for moving seats in the cinema, even though it had 3 out of 20 seats allocated.
- Had a military style escort around McDonalds.
- Went to go for a pub lunch yesterday and got spoken to like a 3 year old for standing in the wrong place, so walked out.

I'm just not going to bother. Having teeth extracted is more fun.

You think people are wearing masks to protect others? Get real - 90% of mask wearers look like frightened rabbits. They think there are protecting themselves.

Also, your argument is for wearing a mask when you have symptoms (whereas I would propose that people with the flu stay at home). It’s definitely not an argument for everyone wearing a mask all the time.

I’m afraid mask lovers are just a variant of lockdown lovers. There’s no argument for it that anyone but an idiot would swallow.

This polling doesn't surprise me. And it bugs me NHS is beyond reproach in UK minds. My personal feeling is the problems we are talking about are 'highlighted' by covid, more than 'caused' by covid. We should be coping better. But whatever your position, it seems to me, part of the issue is public perception of the service is detached from reality.

Balearics have joined Catalonia in making mask wearing mandatory now in all settings except within your house or hotel room and when travelling in a car with family members from the same household.

That’ll make holidays nice, 100 degrees with a face mask on the sun lounger.

Everything seems destined to ruin economies

Agreed about the 'little people'

Went to screwfix on Sunday.

Click and collect only apparently.

Even though no other customers were there, had to click on their website, buy everything there and click/ collect while the staff sat around.

Was told that 'I was lucky they would serve me now you have to wait for the text'

Was told NO STAND OVER THERE - even though I was behind a screen and over 1m from the staff member.

If I didnt need those screws I would have just got them from Amazon.

Do these types of shops not understand that if you push the customer around, they will go elsewhere?

Quoted poster was, I suspect, being sarcastic as there haven't been riots in Leicester despite the lockdown compared to what Elysium posted indicating that we are all obviously happy with local lockdowns...I suggested that people may well be happy with them as long as their financial needs are being met by the state which in this instance they are.

what happens when that support is removed is another story entirely and one that I am sure we will see play out in the not so distant future.

I don't mean immediately. It will take a couple of months.

But at some point society will break down.
