It's not the cleverist of ideas to try and avoid it, I know that.

How come?
Goodwood the other day the marshalls flagged me for noise and told me where they were so I could short shift and avoid getting flagged again? They wanted everyone to have a good day and not be kicked off so helped as much as they could?

Or when you say avoid it, do you mean driving over the grass to complete miss it haha

I wouldn't want to drive a lap where I was backing off here and there to try and avoid it, what is the point in that?
The other thing is they are there for a good reason and if the locals complain the track will get shut down.
Hahaha.

I believe one is on the left hand side around the start/finish line.

Donny’s limit is 98db drive-by isn’t it? It allows for some pretty loud cars!

I got caught out by one on the bridge across the start/finish line, just where you want to be flat out.

When I was getting my warning the steward had to stop speaking whilst a jet landed at East Midlands airport!

trouble is i'm not sure what 'loud' is in this context. Are we talking, cars with catless downpipes and such that easily trigger that threshold?
at bedford last year i simply lifted off around the sound meter and had no issues. Some cars like an M5 competition didn't even bother and they had no issues, and i'm assuming that car must be somewhat as loud as my 440i with the mppsk.
and i think bedford has stricter measures.

i guess i'll find out on the day

My Evo 6 with a 'silenced' exhaust system and a 'silenced' decat was getting my black flagged at Bedford despite passing the static test with ease.

My Corvette was clocked at 103db driveby at Goodwood so I had to short shift passed the sound meter points.

My GT3 is around 104/105db static and had no problems at Donington. Rear engined cars tend to be a bit quieter on the drive-by test though.

Have a look at tracks which have both a static and drive-by limit, e.g. Bedford and Brands(?). Bedford is around 101 static and 89 drive-by?

So Donny's 98 drive-by should be a fair bit more generous than Bedford for example.

Think Bedford is even harsher than that, 99 static and 88 driveby I think.

Our Mini R53 was 95 static but registered 99.5 on the drive by🤷‍♂️. The noise meter is on the left (pit side) between the last Chicaine and the start / finish line, we had to wait until half way down straight before getting back on the throttle hard.

Timely thread as im there soon. SC Atom with OEM backbox + decat = no problem at bedford or dony. Contemplating keeping the sport exhaust on as its a pita to change back to the OEM...

So is there one or two meters? I thought it was just one under the gantry....

Tell me more! My Vette makes the limit at 105db when measured static but have never tripped the drive by at Snetterton which I think is 92db?

Do you know what your Vette makes static? I am at Donny and Silverstone later in the year and as they are drive by only maybe I am not being as concerned as I should be!!!

I've got a C7 Z06.....no idea how loud that is compared with your C6?

My car won't allow me to rev higher than about 4,000rpm when in neutral, so even with all the valves open I think it was about 98db static, but then at full chat on the straight I was black flagged, coming in at 103.5 vs 101db limit. Once I worked out where to change up as I went past the meters, I was fine, but it was a bit of a shame not flooring it right where you'd really want to.

ahhhh ok, gotcha...

When your model Vette was released I came across one at Spring Mountain in Pahrump and enjoyed lapping with him. He was being very cautious in the bends which allowed me to 'keep up' enough for him to time warp away down the straights. Despite having developed mild tinnitus from 60k miles and many track days in my Vette I could still hear the thunder of the C7Z in the distance over my WOT so yeah, I think i'm a bit quieter tbh.

HAHA yeah I thought you might be.
I do love the noise, but it's clearly not ideal for UK track days, I think the only day I wouldn't have any issues would be the rare 109db days they do at Donnigton. I guess in the US all their tracks are in the middle of nowhere so they don't need to worry about it.

Remember that the noise monitors at Donington are linked to the local district council offices and they have the power to shut the circuit down if it transgresses its planning permission and the associated noise management plan.

If your car is too loud and you know it, please don’t come and risk the ire of the Local Govt Environmental Officer. And they have been known to turn up with hand held monitors. Please ensure that the track remains available to everyone to enjoy in the future.

How many circuits in this country have been permanently shut down due to people on a track day 'playing the system' by lifting off/short shifting as they go past the sound meter points? I think you're being a tad dramatic, but I may be wrong and there might have been many times in the past where this has been the case?
