Myself and my wife have just moved into a new house a couple of weeks ago. This morning she came down and proclaimed she had found the previous owners ‘wk book’ (erotic novel) as she put it so delicately which whilst funny is not particularly interesting. However, she also found a rather interesting looking hip flask.

Appears to be some sort of leather wrapped and fairly worn and old looking. It seems like it
Was made well.

Is this a soviet era treasure or some sort of tat?

I would be really interested and grateful if anybody can help identify what it could be?

Good to know, will keep it by the bedside and remember not to drink from it.

The insignia on it is from the Soviet Border Troops if that helps. Some info here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_Border_Troops

That’s really helpful - thank you! I suppose that means it’s at least 29 years old!

Looks like the sort of thing that you used to be able to buy from shady street vendors next to the Berlin Wall.

Sorry to disappoint, but flasks like these are available in every souvenir shop in Russia. They sell loads of different styles with every military & police insignia you can think of. I have a couple of similar flasks from previous trips to Russia.
