I have recently lost a load of weight & tried to get my Austin Reed suit altered but it was too much weight loss & it doesn't look right - looks OK at frnt but back of jacket & trousers looks a bit odd.
I would like to buy a new suit. I have literally zero need for one. But feels wrong not to have one in the wardrobe.
I don't wear one for work, don't leave the house for work, don't need one for customer meetings, don't have an office.
However on the offchance of a job interview (I am well placed in a stable job so this is unlikely) I may need one
I will not spend more than £280 + alterations.
Enough for a sale very entry level Hugo Boss, Reiss, M&S or John Lewis type one
Any comments on which is best quality or any brands worth looking at?

Wait until you need one. You may lose more weight/put some on/change shape tone/muscle wise before you need to use it and then you'll be in the same boat.

To be honest, wouldn't look at brands as much as how they fit.
A £99 Burton suit which happens to fit you nicely will look significantly better than something ill fitting at £499 from HoF.

Just wander around the high Street see what fits.

As said above. Wait till you need one.

In my 12 years of suit wearing, I've gone from chest sizes 38 tailored fit to a 42 regular fit and all that in between.

A bit more than your budget but I had £400 to spend on my last suit. Tried Ted Baker and Boss but bought a wool M&S in the end. It fitted off the peg and for the money was better quality than the 'labels'. M&S might be worth a look at £280.

https://www.cj-antich.com/

This is a Huddersfield based company that makes the cloth for many brands including Hugo Boss.

They have a retail shop including shirts and a selection of suits, prices are always competitive and less than your target price.

You will need to check the current position with regards to opening but I know that a number of people travel some distance to buy suits.

Next do a wide variety of sizes and fittings. As above though a well fitted £100 suit will look better than a badly fitted £500 suit.

Have a look in Charity Shops. You'd be surprised at what you can find - just don't think too hard on why the suit's for sale!

I had to buy a suit just before lockdown.

Tried everything from Next to Hugo Boss. Didn't have time for a tailored suit, and probably wouldn't spend that sort of money anyway.

Went with one from Next in the end as it was the cheapest of the ones I liked (didn't like any of them really), and fit just as well as any of the others. I honestly couldn't tell the difference in quality between this and those 4 times the price.
I wore it once. Hopefully it will be a long time before I need to wear it again.

If you don't need a suit now, then don't buy one. You could get fatter/thinner etc and the suit may age before you use it.

If you suddenly need a suit for an interview etc then get one from M&S. They have a decent range and are reasonably well made for the price, and there is one in every town.

Ted Baker often have sales on suits. Will defo be at the top end of your budget but I have found they wear well if you go for something thats a blend. I have several and always been IRO £300 in the sale and fit is pretty good only had to have 1 adjusted.

You also dont tend to see other people wearing them that often, nothing worse than turning up at an event and seeing someone in the same suit.

Just checked TB currently have (up to) 50% off on suits.
Plenty of jackets £180-£200 and trousers £70-£100.

Charles T, Moss Bros have a good range of fabric and cuts, M&S also worth a look.

I actually got my wedding suit from M&S, it fitted much better than some £6/700 suits I tried, but it’ll depend on your ‘shape’.

I’d wait until you need one and then head to M&S. Boss outlets have done me proud a couple of times at £2-300 but chances of finding the right thing at the right price are slimmer.
I could head to M&S now and guarantee I’d come out with something decent.
