CV19 - The Anti Vaxxers Are Back
Discussion

The oxford study linked above from 26th June, concludes a double layer home made cloth mask is effective. The scottish instruction vid appears to be based on this research, and instructs how to make a double layer fabric mask using common household materials.
The 'fitted properly' basically means covering your mouth and nose and securing by ears or round the back.
It concludes.
Cloth face coverings are effective in reducing source
virus transmission, i.e., outward protection of others, when
they are of optimal material and construction (high grade
cotton, hybrid and multilayer) and fitted correctly and for
source protection of the wearer

Cloth face coverings are ok to reduce droplet spread. Pretty pointless for aerosol transmission <5μm.

Of course. That's fairly obvious no?Cloth face coverings are ok to reduce droplet spread. Pretty pointless for aerosol transmission <5?m.
Whilst making no comment on the efficacy or otherwise of masks inreducing/preventing CV19 transmission, this...

Speak to a surgeon about how uncomfortable it is to wear a mask. They do it to stop their saliva from making contact with patients.
...is utter nonsense. I used to spend 5-6 hours per day wearing masks in surgery, so I feel qualified to comment. You just do not notice you are wearing one.sambucket said:

For SARS and MERS it may just have been the aerosol dosage required for infection was much greater than covid-19 hence the cloth mask wearing had no effect on transmission rates and was a false negative correlation as they were never going to be as infectious as covid-19 (so burnt out naturally) .

That's the problem - only recently has the WHO accepted there is a possibility Covid-19 is spread via aerosol rather than the assumed droplet transmission vector (and took them long enough to accept that as well) . The scientific advice for face coverings is based on the WHO advice around the droplet vector -- so there is a good possibility it is out of date already. Washing hands, covering faces (and not your eyes), coughing into elbows - all good for reducing colds, influenza and other respiratory diseases but may just be a placebo for Covid-19.

WHO accepted the possibility of aerosol infection in certain circumstances back at the beginning of March. There's a big difference between aerosol infection in certain circumstances and in all circumstances. For SARS and MERS it may just have been the aerosol dosage required for infection was much greater than covid-19 hence the cloth mask wearing had no effect on transmission rates and was a false negative correlation as they were never going to be as infectious as covid-19 (so burnt out naturally) .
Providing you're not routinely intubating people without PPE or going to choir practice then I don't think aerosol transmission is a major driver. It may become more of an issue as the weather gets colder, the air gets drier and people spend more time inside in close contact with the windows closed.
