Time's ticking on that mythical vaccine. Are we getting it before Autumn?
Current hope is 1million doses by the end of September and the whole country having it by the end of the year. So far ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 appears to be safe in humans, effective in mice and is currently in the early stages of wide scale international stage 3 testing. All on target and I believe AZ are getting everything ready for mass production.tangerine_sedge said:

As this is the Oxford Vaccine will us Brits be getting it first or will the yanks have first dibs, like they always want to?
First 30 million doses have got the UK's name on them. British university, British company, it would be a travesty if Britons were at the back of the queue.Making the stuff isn't the issue, making sure it works (to some degree) and get approved is the big problem.
The first phase 2b/3 read outs should be available in late August or early September. We're preparing the regulatory submissions now in anticipation of those read outs.
I don't know what discussion are being had with the regulators but they'll have to bring the assessment and approval times down somewhat. A standard marketing approval in Europe takes 210 days, an accelerated assessment is 150 days. This needs to be more like 30 days....

My understanding is that there is lots of discussion with the regulators and they are being very constructive and positive. Given that the team are still positive about hitting the original date I guess that the discussions are going well.
I'm presuming that the data is being shared with the regulators as it becomes available. RTB said:

Is 30 million enough? Not even half the population.
Enough to vaccinate the vulnerable and front line staff. Add in those who already have some form of immunity and we're into herd immunity territory. If the vaccine works. Did I get that wrong?

My understanding was that we won't vaccinate the vulnerable. Only the healthy (and largely invulnerable).
Did I get that wrong?
Yes.Did I get that wrong?
The phase 2b/3 trials have arms that cover over 70s as well as children over 5. The plan will be to vaccinate front line health care staff and the more vulnerable first, in much the same way they use the flu vaccine. If you're under 60 and healthy you won't be at the front of the queue.
The issue will be how effective the vaccine will be in older people, we don't know that yet which is why the trials are ongoing.
Some interesting information here re: the Oxford trials:
