Went back to my indy dealer at 3000miles for a quick job - I leave the bike out of sight for 5 minutes max

Job done and he mentions I need new brakes - on the ride home I hear squeal for the first time

I ride fast but not crazy fast, the bike is a Multistrada 1260 - did I get done?

No he didn't, he just said I need new brakes and the same day I notice squeal for the first time. Just doesn't seem right after 3000 miles?? I've only been hard on the brakes in a few dodgy situations and a couple of times to test

I guess my paranoid mind went straight to something like he scraped them(???) so I buy new via him...

Assuming they haven't been dragging for those 3000 miles, and from the type of riding you describe, there is no way you should need new pads.

Was the bike brand new? Or 2nd hand and you've covered 3000 miles during your ownership?

brand new from said dealer
he knows I'm a "car guy" also, not sure how he thinks I wouldn't be suspicious - but what realistically can be done in 5 minutes?

Sounds odd to me. Have you taken the pads out yourself and gave them a quick once over?

Fwiw my S1000R has just clicked over 3k miles and gets ridden pretty hard and I also carry a pillion from time to time to too.

I only checked the pads the other day (OEM in Brembo calipers) and they have a load of meat left on them.

No but its about time I learn to do it myself. Have just arranged with a friend to look at them tomo wink

Can a dealer change pads out quickly in 5 minutes if he wanted to?

Yeah, I just can't see this being a likely situation. It's incredibly high risk for very little reward. If the noise has been "caused" by them, it's more likely just due to them disturbing something on inspection, rather than some sort of scam.

Btw, if you find a fair bit of meat on the pads left, it might be a case of them realising you're the sort that doesn't check your brake pads, and you may not be back again until they are down to the metal. It can be a bit subjective, and a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation.

I can see potential for garages overcharging, or charging for work that was not done. I don't see them changing brake pads out just to hope you pay for them to be replaced though.

I don't get that tbh, from no noise to brake squeal after inspection doesn't sit well with me, FYI they changed the windscreen and seat setup

Its possible, but I would very much doubt it.

Give them a call tomorrow and ask why they suggested changing them.

Change both sets? Nope, not in 5 minutes. 10 mins yes. How sure are you about the time line??
He could however have removed the anti squeal plates that sit across the back of the pads, checked the pad thickness and refitted the plates. If now disturbed or not quite in the right location this may cause squeaking
Regards miles covered, i wouldnt of thought you'd need new pads unless you're dragging them unknowingly.
Also, you might have a reasonable amount of pad thickness left but possibly not enough to reach your next service

You didnt say if it was front or rear..

The brakes may squeal cos the pads are glazed .

But i dont see anyone changing pads so they can tell you that you need pads..

Dont assume just because 'there is meat on them' that they are serviceable. Like anything they have a limit, and performance drops off as they wear because they cant dissipate the heat.

I dont run race pads past 50% , becasue once they get proper hot , you can boil the fluid in no time.

Interesting thanks

Unless I'm misunderstanding what dragging the brakes means I'm sure I'm not applying brakes and throttle at same time

Its the front brakes but its also hard to isolate the sound through the helmet. Will test tomorrow fully
