Hi, through a recent recommendation on here I have purchased a Sunbeem Honey locust tree.

It's about 4 to 5 ft tall at the moment with two main trunks (if you can call them that yet) and then one fairlu large side branch growing off one trunk.

Obviously I would like the tree to get taller before it starts going sideways.

Can i remove this green branch without killing the tree?

I don't mind the two trunks I will just keep them fixed close together until at height.

I did think about removing one of the trunks all together so I can train one fairly upright then let it spread but I'm not sure if removing best part of half the tree would kill it.

What do the green fingered among you think.

Here is where the trunk splits

I would cut the branch off. I don't think it will affect the health of the tree and will probably encourage the remainder to grow.

I am not an expert but have experience of pruning trees and shrubs.

So it’s split at the graft union looks like. I would nip off the shoot on the graft (last photo)

The other branch I probably wouldn’t take off completely quite yet but prune back for now, to encourage the trunk to thicken.

You'd be better off buying a tree that didn't have a split trunk as that one is just going to be compromised even if you cut one of the trunks off. Such severe pruning needs to be done in late Autumn.

hope it was cheap, you could cut of one of the stems and let it grow single stemmed, its young enough and looks vigorous enough - ideally should ahve been done in the nursery before sale

you can snip off the green shoot - i assume that's what is being referred to?

they make nice specimens if it gets going

It was 35 quid purchased off the Internet so could not see it or pick an individual plant.

I will wait until Autumn then remove one of the stems, if it lives great if not I will get another one.

I'd ask them to send you another one. It would be ok if it was a bush but this is going to grow into a sizeable tree & split trunks often cause problems.

I called my very ugly shaped tree, a Dracula tree. Branches grew out and then straight then down, like arms out and dangling down at the elbow. Cut all of them off (at the elbow) and I've done a lot of trimming mid-season and it's finally a decent shape. Full and tall.

I can't figure out how to ask a question in a different box, and hoping someone can help...So disappointed in my purple robe locust, it's skeletal, greenery at the tips only. Will topping it thicken it? I wanted a little shade and privacy but have neither. It has leaves only four months or less. 10 years ago the nursery said it will thicken up. I'm retired and don't have time for this. Help.
