Hey guys,

Been curious about this for ages especially now I do many miles on the m4 where we have an average speed zone of 50mph for miles upon miles.

What is it with those that just ignore the average speed and happily go 70mph or those that speed up between cameras and brake back down to 50 at the next set of yellow cameras.

What do they know that most people that follow the rules don’t???

I was on the M27 stretch today.

Some people drive up your arse, but won't overtake

Some people speed through like they don't have a clue

Some people brake for the cameras

I always wonder if people are driving cars not registered properly or are just thick/can't read. Maybe some foreign drivers that can't read English too.

Something like 8% of cars are on false plates. Add in foreign/stolen/improperly-registered vehicles and there's plenty who can just disregard cameras. rolleyes

How are you measuring your average speed?

That seems ‘a lot’.
There are about 32 million registered cars in the UK. So about 2 and a half million are on false plates? Naaaaah, not having it.

I stick my cruise control on at indicated 57mph and fly past most other vehicles. I’d hate to be one of those cars with lorries up their bum, or worse stuck in the middle of a convoy.

Never had a ticket.

There are the scenarios that man you can hoof it a bit, so for example, you join on at a junction that is mid contraflow, and until you reach an average speed camera you can pretty much do what you like (not that I do as the limit is there normally to protect the workers and to reduce accidents)

So

I can also confirm they do work.

If you know what the guidelines are for prosecution then you can stay just under them. Your Speedo will read high.

When I had a tomtom running showing 55 mph with the car on cruise the speedo was showing 59, never got a ticket (for that).

It is the idiots doing dead on 50 in the outside lane holding everyone else up that annoy me.

It's actually the idiots doing more than 50 that's the problem. If the limit is 50 why do you need to do more than that??

I'm happy to be "an idiot in the outside lane" doing 50mph. It means I'm not sandwiched amidst the HGV's & if prats want to tail-gate me because I refuse to speed then tough I just gently ease off the throttle or click down on the cruise control.

Because they don't understand how the process works!

The average speed cameras don't even measure your speed!

Would you move over if there was a space in lane 2?

You are part of the problem.

I don't mind if you want to stick to 50mph, but please maintain proper lane discipline and move to the left unless you are overtaking.

Keeping station with cars in adjacent lanes is even more moronic and more dangerous than drivers realise.

But they are 'average speed cameras' - Of course they measure speed. Then they average it.

That's why it's safe to do 70 between them, as long as you slow down to 50 when you see them.

Duhh!!

Do the areas with average speed cameras also have signs advising you not to change lane? I don't get out much but seem to remember them going hand in hand.

Sorry they don't. They read your numberplate and note the time you passed that point, they know the distance from the last camera and they then calculate your average!

Distance travelled / Time taken !

I'm astounded that had to be explained!
