Im looking for a bit of advice on what action to take to avoid getting into bother.

Situation:

Im currently deployed with the Army. No mobile phones permitted, no phones on base that can call the DVLA. Leave to the UK cancelled due to corona. I've had my post redirected to my mother. Car currently locked away off the road, but was left insured, taxed and MOTd until july.

Issue:

DVLA have sent a letter saying that my road tax direct debit will be cancelled unless i get my car MOTd. I've obviously been unable to do this. I now have a car that the DVLA will assume is on the road illegally, though in practise is not. Efforts to get in touch have been fruitless.

Is this going to cause issues?

Any thoughts are welcome, thanks.

Just go on-line and register it SORN if it is off road?

The automatic six month MOT extension is still running throughout the month of July so I don't understand why you have received this letter.

Unless it is due in august there is the 6 month extension in place.

Are you sure it is not a scam letter?

Stick your registration in here and see what it comes back with.

Your mother can tax the car in a Post Office with the reminder when it comes through the post.

Mine was due 19th July, but with the extension it's now 19th Jan 2021.

Not had any email or letter about it though.

Are you positive the MOT is due this month ? As above, July MOTs should be automatically extended by 6 months.

You can check the MOT status & history of a vehicle here.

Sorry- the papers for the car are locked up too. I haven't got access to the v5, nor has there been a reminder. The only letter that's made it through was one explaining the direct debit would be stopped if i didn't get it MOTd.

Checked online and it says MOT expired, due 03 july.

There must be a reference number on the letter from DVLA which you should be able to use to make the SORN declaration. Ask your mother to send you a photo of the full letter if she can't find it. If there's nothing that you can use to make the SORN declaration on the letter, someone will have to get the V5C from wherever you've locked it up. Is there nobody who can access it?

Just checked mine, due 30/07/2020, no extension. I'd booked it in anyway as my Indy is literally at the end of my road.

The website updates with the extension about a week before the original expiry date.

Your mother can complete a V62 form at a Post Office and SORN it at the same time.

If you need to tax your vehicle

You might be able to tax your vehicle at a Post Office and order a new log book at the same time.

Take in a filled in application for a log book (V62) and £25 fee to a Post Office that deals with vehicle tax - the Post Office will tell you if you can tax without the log book.

It can take up to 6 weeks to get the replacement log book by post.

You can contact the DVLA via their own webpage if your MOT hasn't automatically extended for six months.
