Can anyone recommend some dual purpose pedals I can use normally but also clip-in?

Was thinking of the Shimano EH500 SPD flat pedals. I would also need some shoes and cleats as well

I put a set of these on the wife’s bike at the start of lockdown, she likes them. Plenty of grip on the flat side.

Or try these, at half the price; they are a little heavier though:

I've been using a set for many years smile

The wife and I use Crank Brothers Mallets. Nice flat pedal and clip in.

Search for 'Platform Adapter's for SPD Pedals'. Shimano used to make them. I'm not sure if they still do but I've used them in the past and they do the job. Plus they make it really easy to convert the pedal back to 'clip-on' only because you simply have to unclip the adapter.

Edit: Like these:

I've had those and they are pretty awful in my experience, very little grip unless you are using them on the very softest of trainers.

I've bought a set of EH500s (second hand but unused on FB marketplace) destined for my yet to be delivered, delayed gravel bike. I stuck them on my MTB for a ride with my lad the other day and they are very good indeed on the flatties side. I've not ridden them with SPDs yet but as the contact point is no different to any other M520 pedal or similar I'm not expecting any surprises. I'd recommend, but they aren't the lightest if that bothers you.

I use MTB shoes (Giro Rumble) & Boardman SPD/Flat hybrid pedals. They work very well.

I have Shimano DX M647 Pedals on my gravel bike as its used to take my daughter out as much as anything else. They're brilliant.

2nd Crank Brothers, but I use these - https://www.wiggle.co.uk/crank-brothers-doubleshot...

Completely flat on one side for regular shoes and good clip on the other. And on sale.

Thanks for all the suggestions I will look through the options.

Just two silly questions, is the price for a pair of pedals or just one? and are all these SPD clip-ins?

The price is for a pair of pedals, unless stated otherwise.

SPD is the clip in (toe-clip-less) bit. The ones in the photo below are the 2 bolt MTB style ones which I prefer to road ones.

I have used Shimano A530 (and their predecessor) on my commuter/errand Cross bike.

I recently replaced the last set that had lasted for many years and thousands of miles.

The adapters I mentioned are designed to clip onto an spd pedal. However, they are only really any good for very casual riding; jumping on the bike with a pair of trainers for a quick ride? But isn't that the general idea of having these as an option?

Looks good. The clip in design is simple on the crankbrothers also.

I have some caged SPD pedals (Shimano M424) which are a decent compromise if you want to clip in for proper riding or just jump on in sneakers for a casual pop down to the shops or ride to work etc. The clip bit does protrude a little in the centre, but for shoes with a bit of tread on them its fine.

I had some plain SPDs with the clip-in plastic insert on one side for a while, the plastic insert was pretty rubbish really - too small and slippery to be much good for anything, and they always seemed to pivot the wrong side up for whichever shoes you were wearing.

The caged SPDs are the same on both sides so don't have that problem.

I also have these, only issue is they can be a bit slippery when it's raining.

The EH 500 might be good for you then - they have little grub screws you can put in on one side for additional grip.

Trying to find stock of anything was actually quite tricky. I decided on the Crank Brothers Double Shot 2 mainly as they had stock and could deliver before the weekend.

Just need to find some compatible shoes now.

Half-n-half's can be more annoying that you think. I had some, but spent ages spinning the peddle round to get the right side for whatever shoes I was wearing. In the end I brought some Shimano M424's and haven't looked back.
