The ERG aside (I'm sure the EU have by now learnt to mostly ignore them), I wonder how knowingly and overtly breaking international law (so soon after signing and with the same team in govt) helps or hinders our trustworthiness with other nations, especially as we are so desperate to get trade deals with many of them.

Good to see Andrew Neil telling it how it is.

So now you've decided it is something to do with the ERG?

I can't keep up.

Tuna I've read Andrew Neil's tweet several times and I have no idea why you're going on about the ERG when I've made absolutely no mention of them.

Andrew Neil makes no mention of them either.

It hasn't happened yet but Brandon Lewis stood in the House of Commons and confirmed the proposed legislation does break international law.

I linked to a video of a Government Minister standing in the House of Commons being asked whether the Government intended on breaking international law and he literally answered "Yes, this does break international law in a very specific and limited way.".

And that's what you come back with.

That's really quite something hehe

Lewis effectively told the house that it’s government policy to break international law but it’s ok because it’s only done in a ‘specific and limited way’. You rest easy if you wish, but to some observers it looks as though there is a bit of a meltdown here, with no obvious political way out. PMQs should be interesting tomorrow.

Just thinking about this. Some see it as merely a threat to the EU but given its counter-productive effect on negotiations that seems unlikely.

From all the detail out there it isn't throwing out the WA just unilaterally interpreting the provisions in respect to NI to minimise UK/NI internal trade friction.

It is also likely to create a showdown with the HOL and this is just the sort of issue where Boris/Cummings would like such a confrontation.

In summary it looks like talks are most likely to fail and the UK isn't going to capitulate in order to progress them (which is good news) and legislation being brought in now because it will create a political confrontation that may take some time to resolve.
