I don't know. Perhaps. But I would think there are plenty of other countries, especially in Eastern Europe, where the same could be said, but all those countries are seeing a rise in deaths that corresponds to the rise in cases. Even in the Baltic states which you'd expect to be the most similar to the Nordic ones, although the numbers are tiny you can clearly see a rise in deaths. But in Sweden, Norway, Finland, no-one is dying of Covid now.

Likewise what's the point in a Scottish pub in November if you have to stand outside.

Screams of giving them just enough leeway so they don't have to compensate them despite the fact they'll all be totally screwed.
Much of this looks like intentionally killing sectors of the economy while pretending that it is unintentional.

I'm sure that's just coincidence.

That won’t happen. My lad is at Uni and will be coming home for Christmas. He is doing some face to face lectures. If they don’t let him back then he would be due a refund of accommodation and tuition fees which I’m guessing the Unis don’t want.
no he wouldnt, if he breaks rules then he would be discharged from the course and no refund given.

What is funny about it, if I may ask.
It's funny because it's surreal.

I find it hilarious that people will accept being told clothing and sanitary products are not essential.

That a government minister has to stand up and say tampons are essential.

That is hilarious.
As above, because it is totally and utterly insane, I forget the name of the idiot that pushed these regs thorough in Wales but he needs a damn good kick up the backside for introducing such bks.

The mere fact that he dares to introduce regulations banning the sale of sanitary towels due to them being classed as none essential, or kids clothing isn't essential or any other manner of products is just plain unbelievable, yet he deems alcohol to be essential, which says it all, the man is a deranged lunatic and should be carted off to the funny farm by the men in white coats.

What will it take for him to back down, a queue of women that are on, or perhaps blood on the dance-floor, actually it's not remotely funny. Anyone with a wife or girlfriend knows that it's not a nice time of the month for them, and to be treated in this manner is utterly disgraceful, the man should be sacked.

Aside from which, we are not in North Korea and he has absolutely no right in a democratic country to force a list of approved goods upon us, what difference does it make to heath and safety if you are in the store anyway as to what goods you buy, the guy is a fking idiot. These types of tyrants and their petty rules and regulations make a mockery of the whole system.

I can't wait till Christmas to see what happens next with these senseless rules and regulations because I doubt very much folks will comply with any bubble bks forbidding them to meet up for Christmas celebrations, and I doubt very much that Boris wants to go down in the history books as the first Prime Minister to cancel Christmas.

Good on Lord Sumption for having the balls to go on air with his condemnation of the way the current government are behaving and he is damn right, having listened to his comments and those made by Dr Mike Yeadon, Ivor Cummins, and several others I think the government need disbanding, they are clearly not fit for purpose, though who we replace them with is debatable because they all seem to be like a great big bunch of clueless numpties, this is what happens when you have 2nd or 3rd generation career politicians, what a utterly useless bunch of spineless self-serving parasites. Bring on Bonfire night and let's hope Guy Fawkes gets it right this time.

As a side note, walked into the petrol station today without a mask on and noted the guy in front was also sans mask, so looks like more and more folks have had enough of this ste, I certainly have.

Do they have deaths? Maybe they are not testing every death like we are? Maybe their pcr test is set to a lower cycle count? Maybe, given they have 8 months, they are protecting their vunerable better than us. Maybe a flu outbreak is being recorded (properly) over there?

I like the way the government are "keen to learn " from countries doing better than us - except when it comes to Sweden it would appear.

I think Elysium posted this. Cartoon of the year for me, sums it up perfectly. Boris choosing between different forms of lockdowns whilst studiously ignoring the elephant in the room, Sweden

But.....there are three countries that don't fit into either of these two camps.

Sweden, Norway and Finland. They all have rising cases for sure, but daily deaths haven't really moved at all since the end of the initial wave.

What do those three countries do differently?
No masks....? wink

Agree with the above. It's barking mad and stuff you couldn't have made up in a comic sketch last year - taping off entire supermarket aisles, refusing to sell books (and sanitary products!!!), isolating an entire part of the UK country because deaths are rising as they do every year at this time of year. It's hilarious that this is actually happening IN THE UK, not some banana republic, not North Korea, not China but the UK.

Were / are DVDs roped off as well? The idea that books and other forms of entertainment cannot be sold in a lockdown is mind-boggling.

Or under the new guidance of "plead your case to shop staff" do you need to beg for them?

"Please miss, my TV is broken and I really really want to read a book"

"No sorry, I cannot allow that, have a bottle of vodka and some tampons"

Locked down early and hard like a champ. #FollowedTheScience, #TakingItSeriously

Now in the top 5 worldwide for cases rising. They had < 200k cases in August, now its over 1 million. 1 in 44 have caught it and they now have 28,000 dead. So their lock down has only succeeded in delaying. Which might be nicer for them since its their summer now, but it seems like a lot of the population are at the end of their ropes having endured all those restrictions only for it go mental when they are finally released. That article is sickening / heartbreaking:

article said:
The extraordinary length of the quarantine — coupled now with its frustrating futility — has grown into what scientists here are treating as a mass sociological experiment on the limits of social isolation. Researchers with the University of Buenos Aires interviewed more than 3,600 people in September and found many were struggling.

Nearly half reported feeling great anxiety. More than a third said they had developed depression. Alcohol and drug use was surging. A plurality said the government had become too preoccupied with health concerns, to the exclusion of all others, and needed to find a more balanced approach. Most were more worried about what the pandemic would do to their wallet than to their health.

A separate survey found many of the effects were more pronounced among children. Seven in 10 reported symptoms of depression and loneliness.

“I have a son who’s 3 and a half,” Bonicalzi said. “Almost his entire conscious life has been spent in quarantine, isolated. When we took him back out, he got very, very nervous, clinging to us, beginning to scream when he came into contact with other people, especially with small children.”

They took him to a psychologist, who said the boy had developed a social phobia. He has improved, but Bonicalzi still worries.

“There’s no precedent for how isolation this significant will impact the psychology of children his age,” he said. “The truth is we didn’t know when this was going to end.”
This is just wrong. Totally wrong.

Yet the BBC are lauding Australia, with a similar (if not worse) approach, as something to praise?

I do wonder how they manage to keep finding very old death reports to add to todays numbers with 1 death in todays NHS England numbers coming from 27th March.

174 reported today
95 - 80+
70 - 60-79
8 - 40-59
1 - 20-39

I also find it ridiculous that 11 of these didn't have a positive test?

I live in NE Wales and indeed it’s true.

My local Tesco Extra has a mezzanine floor, mainly clothing, household goods, electrical items, DVDs etc.

They also have bike tools and accessories up there too.

The latter are ‘allowed’ but you cannot access them as Tesco has seen fit to cordon the whole floor off.

Drippy has well and truly lost the plot. Expect his dismissal at the elections next year....
