Some great comments on there

‘Many of these elderly Left wingers (who would pack Corbyn meetings) worked in the Civil Service or Academia, had generous tax payer funded final salary pensions, bought their properties for a song in the 1970s & benefited from Thatcher's reforms. They can afford to be Socialists.’

But this is why everyone is in so much shock.

If you read social media, twitter you would have thought Brexit was some crazy mad idea that only a few were considering.
Then the shock that they won!!!

If you read social media, twitter you would have thought Trump winning was some crazy mad idea that only a few were considering.
Then the shock that he won!!!

Many who live their lives online only see what the sad few who also live their lives online are thinking, they just don't get they are a minority.

The problem is this small percentage have an inability to listen to other people's views, and this is their downfall.

The fact of the matter is, many people just ignore the bickering online, many ignore most of the media, many strangley just vote for people they think they can relate to more.

I was talking about the dangers of listening to small but vocal percentages.

95% of all polls before Brexit was showing Leave had the edge, yet when it happened there was genuine shock from that vocal minority who couldn't believe it had happened. They then dug out the two or three polls that showed remain had it and had it that had been bandied around between themselves to make themselves seem better during the run up.

I have top say, looking at that link I am pretty amazed at that result.
I genuinely thought a YouGov poll on "Brexit: right or wrong?" would be more like 80% voting wrong at this stage.
Surely only those who are still trying to fight the result are looking for polls at this stage, and everyone that voted leave have pretty much moved on?

Makes me think that there are probably a lot of people who voted remain who now just want to get on with it. I know a few like that.
I also know a few who voted leave and now think it might be better to remain.

There's a vocal minority who still can't accept it happened and are still angry about it, with people like A C Grayling and Terry Christian coming across as genuinely unhinged, but as you say the silent majority have moved on. If we went by Twitter or Reddit then Remain, Corbyn and Hillary would have won by a landslide. No idea what will happen in the US election, but certainly be far closer than what online likes and upvotes would suggest.

So no change then. As Orwell wrote 80 odd years ago

"England is perhaps the only great country whose intellectuals are ashamed of their own nationality. In left-wing circles it is always felt that there is something slightly disgraceful in being an Englishman and that it is a duty to snigger at every English institution, from horse racing to suet puddings. It is a strange fact, but it is unquestionably true that almost any English intellectual would feel more ashamed of standing to attention during “God Save the King” than of stealing from a poor box."

That's another one - all the lefties I mentioned above to a man appear to despise the UK. The first to say that we are a tinpot little nothing, decrying our past, our monuments. The first to say "what is British anyway" when arguing that we should let in every single economic migrant out there.

As always there is a flip side, there’s just as many people who think blindly that being British is always the best, blind patriotism is just as bad as the opposite that you describe.

I’m not overly patriotic myself, I think the UK is a wonderful place to live and I am lucky to have been born here, but it was just that, luck, it’s also not the ‘best’ place in the world to live, how would I possibly be able to know that.

I've reduced my social media usage considerably over the last year or two, more becuase it was a drain on time than mental health, however I do enjoy a good Twitter session winding up the hard left.

The fundamental problem with the majority of Twitter users s that they align to others with similar views, and block or ignore anyone or anything that challenges those views. The echo chamber effect is very strong over there.

https://theconversation.com/the-problem-of-living-...

Similarly - there is no discernible difference between the far right and far left for the majority of us stood close to the centre.

The shouty minority in action. A lot of what goes on ‘social media’ wise, is quite obviously trumped up by people who would be ignored if they piped up on any other platform. There are far too many shouty weirdos who’s opinions really need to be taken with a huge skip load of salt, who have been given a ( largely unregulated) forum to spout their gibberish. What a world we live in eh? It’s a double edged sword though. It’s also far easier to find useful insights now, you just need the right ‘filters’ in place.
