Queuing for Primark?! People must have nothing better to do..

But it is similar with the barbers, I went out and the 2 barbers near me both were full inside had about 10 people queuing outside. That's going to be a 2/3 hour wait at least!

I'm in desperate need of a haircut, my last one was in december but I'll wait until later in the week and try again. After 4 months an extra few days doesn't make a difference.

Long queues reported at Primark stores despite some opening at 7am
Reported by who? Tabloids wanting clicks...

Unless Primark sent out 'special offer' emails, no incentive to turn up at 7am, Bit early - most Primark Customers tend to not miss Phil and Holly on This Morning.

Phil and Holly are not on at the moment, Dermot and Allison are standing in, so they are not missing anything smile

Perhaps you would be better able to comment accurately if you were to visit a few city/town centres and see for yourself.

Would be a duplication of effort, as you can post the pics you took when you visited a few city/town centres this morning smile

Wife got talking to a fellow mum at the park yesterday, who it turned out was walking for primark in town.

Wife tried to be positive, “good news about tomorrow etc are you opening at midnight”

“They wanted us to but no one would work it”

To be fair the pent up demand for Primark products will still be there at 9am as opposed to midnight on a cold Sunday night. Opening would just have been for the local news, not revenue.
Of course it would, but where's the harm in that? You're talking about a workforce of thousands who have been paid to sit on their arses by their employers for over half a year whilst accruing full working benefits.

Their employers now need a bumper turn out to help get our economy moving and start repaying all that lost revenue.

A photo opportunity whilst (no doubt) being paid overtime for the good of their employers who have fought to keep them gainfully employed?

Using microfiche that everyone else got rid of years ago ? So you failed to modernise and who do you blame ? Certainly not yourself it seems.
You're missing the point.

How does a business modernise? They borrow money based on future gains, and repay it with the additional revenue or savings.

Local government can't borrow to run day to day services, and it's funding is reducing. Existing savings are being soaked up by increased demand each year, and council tax increases don't cover the difference really.

I am aware of private sector companies that still operate a patch work out outdated and incompatible systems, but it is much more common in local government.

And where do we turn for modernisation? Ah yes, the beacon of efficiency itself, the private sector.

Want to update your phone banking system to pay funds to a new account? £1k please.

Want to introduce technology that is already 5 years old? Ok, £1.2k a day consultancy charge, even though my team know the technology and know what's needed. Often, it was my team hand holding or pointing out errors to the software supplier rep.

The days of local government writing it's own software solutions have long gone (thanks to the crucible of capitalism and dogmatism of the Conservatives), so now we're just reaping what was sown with councils with outdated IT, asset stripped of talent, and never enough money to do the job properly.

Of course, sales and IT bods can have their £100k weekend toys, but they don't count right? But local government avoiding the race to the bottom on pensions (which for most members still remain "modest" is somehow bad?

Anyway, this is all off topic from a council increasing parking fees.

Only adult social care precept is ring fenced for adult social care.

Parking charges are ringfenced for highways and transportation purposes, but of course increasing income reduces the amount of subsidy required for transport and highways from elsewhere in the general fund, allowing that money to be used on other services.

Parking increases could well be a green wash..In which case we're lucky we live in a democracy, because voters can in fact choose who run the council every 4 years, and generally get the councillors they deserve.

You don't think that some people might have run out of socks, pants, tights etc or just want something different for their wardrobe?
For the ladies at least it's probably a massive boost to feeling like they're getting back to something like normality. Anything that helps the mental state must surely be a good thing?
You think waiting in a massive queue outside Primark is normal and will help someone's mental state ?

My point is that these people must be daft. We've survived without Primark for months. Go back later when there are no queues.

Supermarkets selling clothes have been open all lockdown. I'd go with feelgood, not need.

Though I'm finding it hard to understand the attraction of Primark a 07.00 at -2c .

My usual barbers opened up their online booking portal two weeks ago. By the time I remembered and tried to book a few hours later they were 100% booked up for the next month.

They had one barber per day doing walk ins but I can imagine it will be ten deep with that annoying "who is next" feeling as you wait.

Who in their right mind queues for a barbers, I’ve used the same one for between 30-40 years, for the last 20 years he’s been appointments only, have a hair cut, he then slots you in for the next 4,5 or 6 depending on how far his book is made to, then just turn up on time, sit in the chair, 10 minutes later you’re on your way out.

Forget standing or siting around for half a day at the weekend for a 10 minute trim.

Women’s salons have been like that since the dark ages, why are some barbers still making clients sit in the shop for hours on end?

I'm guessing but I imagine its because most men couldn't be bothered to make an appointment for it and would prefer to do it on a whim when they think about it or have the time and inclination. I say i'm guessing because i've been shaving my head for the last 10 plus years at home.

Possibly, like most of the other Primark haters on PH, you are not a female.....??

Always seems odd the amount of stick meted out to any business that is highly successful.

If everyone went back later when there's no queue (as is being suggested here), then:

a) They'd be no queue, because no one would be there because they would all be waiting until there's no queue.

b) When they did go back, there'd be a big queue, because all those people who'd not gone to avoid the initial queue, would then be forming a queue.

Normal traffic, parked in the multi storey in Surrey basin, didn't stay long so £2.

Visited a few shops found what I wanted. A lot of women's shops had queues but not long ones, the ones I went to were fine. Some queues outside male haircut places not womens. Assuming as latter is appointments historically.

Weather out, town was heaving, most people had shopping bags so had made purchases.

Those who think online will take over are deluded, I went to get a new running top, looked at around 20 across 5 shops, chose 1, job jobbed. Buying online would have taken longer.

John Lewis had a stand full of reduced open box coffee machines, so guessing they want to maximise sales before people go back to the office.
