Ok this has to be an early April fool.

Seriously?

No it’s a wind up. No car manufacturer would be stupid enough to tell small boys Sod off you’re not welcome. Who do they think make buying decisions. Parents??

No I’m wrong if Subaru can sell to lesbians that non binary market is just crying out for Defenders.

Marketing geniuses I stand corrected.

Its quite common in STEM activities.

At work, we have had a number of days to interest children in engineering that are only open to girls.

Your first mistake was taking the Daily Mail as gospel.

Crazy. It’s as if JLR management is trying to send their business down the pan.

Reputation for poor build quality and reliability? Check.
Pissing on the chips of the classic car world by going after C-Type replicas and Suffolk cars? Check.
Terrible dealership customer service? Check.
Promoting gender inequality? Check.
Binning off the new electric XJ... then committing to being EV only in the next few years anyway? Check.

Don’t get me wrong, I like older Land Rovers and Jags, but there’s got to be a serious screw loose somewhere. Some of the business decisions and the way JLR conduct themselves, to me, sadly feels like they’re attempting to orchestrate their own demise, one cock up at a time.

Yeah, clearly offering some "two week virtual work experience" opportunities to girls to try to get more of them into engineering is going to totally destroy Land Rover. They won't have any male engineers ever wanting to work there ever again after this.

It's the Mail.

There is no 'test' & no evidence that can demonstrate someone identifies as non-binary.

You say you're non-binary on the application form & that's it - you are non-binary; as non-binary as the most non-binariest of people, so this is still open to everyone.

I once took a non-binary test. I got 0.

Ok I know it’s the mail. I know that JLR will have male engineers, positive discrimination, gender balancing, no potential engineer left uncatered for regardless of orientation gender etc etc but essentially to tell young boys (who are still at the no job but a bedroom poster stage of life) don’t bother to apply to us is pretty poor.

I thought you'd have to score 2 or more for non-binary?

That's a pass. To fail, you should have got 2 or more.

That kind of pragmatic, reasonable response simply won't do at all. laugh

Meh. It's just this one thing they're doing. What else do they do? How many other sessions are planned? How many boys are involved in other stuff?

They don't need to make special overtures to the boys. Society has already conditioned them that they are suited to a job with cars. JLR has male engineers coming out of their ears.

This is specifically and overtly targetted at bringing girls into engineering. And that's, unconditionally, a good thing.

Well said. It’s another of those endless DM stories that seems to arouse a special sort of indignation in their readership. Why people can’t see through this and why they continue to read the rag is beyond me.

I agree entirely. The more and more engineery types of any gender learn and realise that JLR rates are wk, then sooner or later they may actually wake up and realise they have to offer decent pay rates.

Until then JLR will continue employing cheap monkeys and making tat.

Makes total sense.
If you employ people with small hands you can cram even more stuff into the engine bay...........getmecoat

I do pretty much agree with you, but the messaging around this is pretty poor I think. I'd be very sorry for my sons if in future they get messages like this back from school. The message would come across to them that to move girls forwards they have to lessen the life choices of boys - which I don't think is the aim at all but that's how it could get interpreted.

I work for an Engineering company, we support a lot of STEM activities, many of which are focused on increasing girls interest in engineering.

It isn't about discrimination, it is about increasing the talent pool, If you increase the talent pool, you get better talent.
