Used to happen in London all the time and it didn't matter what paving - slabs/block.

Company drops off paving to resurface the High Street. At night a crew in hi-viz arrive in a grab lorry with fake plates and lift the whole lot. Councils are much more time sensitive about deliveries now!

Heard this all over the news yesterday as if it was something new. It's been rife for years, well it has been around our way anyway. Tends to happen in waves, you get nothing then all of a sudden you're getting reports of stolen stone flags several times a week which is obviously one group running about at night on the pinch.

Best thing is the public who then whinge when I don't replace them with like for like or brand new York stone flags. Yeah, I'm really going to use tax payers money to give the thieves a nice new replenished stock of brand new or recycled stone flags to nab!

And probably advise them not to leave them lying around in future.
More likely to be something along the (usual) lines of
This was a particularly thoughtless crime which has left the area unsafe and could result in serious injuries to pedestrians.

I was driving down the road and all the heavy cast metals grates to the kerb side were gone.
Lots of big holes for people to fall down, break a leg or fall into road, or for a pedal bike to be knocked off course.
Same kind of thieving scum at work.

You could probably just keep them in with a short fence.

stone slabs like york stone fetch a fair price these days.
£100-£150 Sqm

Although that doesn't look like York stone to me.

Looking at the street view they probably are, nice square ones too so in the region of £100 a pop.

I have heard of our favourite ethnic minority stealing Hedges and gates, but paving slabs seems to be a new one ??
Horsham you say, the local council do seem to be very accommodating.

Also "reclaimed/antique/worn", do they go for higher prices? Possibly if the thieves are who we think they are then it might not matter so long as they look something like the customer is expecting.

It’s actually pretty common, stone slabs and paving sets

The other things that “vanish” during the night are drain covers and grates
Despite being virtually worthless as scrap apparently. Used to be cast iron which had a value but new ones are ductile iron and of little scrap value.

It's not sneasy to nick a wall.

Same in Lancashire as Yorkshire. Traditionally all the back to back terraces had flag stone back yards, over the years they've been stolen or replaced and the flags picked up by reclamation yards, old flags are worth a fortune. Chimneys too.

I’m not sure “accommodating” is the correct term. Councils have a legal duty to allocate sufficient land for gypsy/traveller needs
