I’m currently in St Lucia with the Mrs (remember they’ve been threatening here with the red list for the past few weeks).

I have to say it’s great. We’re on one of the popular resorts, and for all the fearmongering, most of the restaurants on the resort are outside there’s no requirement for masks. They’re not really enforcing it inside either and there’s lots of Americans here that don’t wear them so it’s all very relaxed. We get asked to sanitise our hands on entering some restaurants which we’re happy to do, but otherwise we’ve pretty much forgotten about covid.

The worst was an excursion we did where we had to wear them on the mini busses (which seemed fairly reasonable) but otherwise on the boat or outside we were told to remove them. The staff all wear them
at all times and I’ve only seen a couple of people actively trying to wear one all holiday which is really encouraging (not sure which nationality - never got close enough to tell!)

The plane was a pain (BA) as they had constant announcements saying to keep your mask on ‘even between courses and as soon as you’ve eaten or had a drink’. Thankfully most in our compartment (business) removed them as soon as the seatbelt sign went out and the staff never passed comment. Fingers crossed for the same on the way home, we’re well over a metre from anyone else and I trust the HEPA filters on the plane just fine.
There was still a weekend curfew when we were in St. Lucia last week. Barbados was worse with masks required everywhere in or outside and a 9pm curfew, 6pm on Sundays.

Thankfully the resort seems to be completely exempt from the curfew - or making up their own rules! As we’d resigned ourselves to a resort type holiday to escape covid we’re not complaining, the only effect so far is they wouldn’t let me take the hobiecat out after 2pm last Saturday ‘because curfew’.

Barbados is where I’d rather be right now as after spending years worth of holidays there I know it like a local…however when we booked this the covid protocols there meant you were trapped on a resort and couldn’t even hire a car as a tourist….no thanks. I’ll wait until I can book my own place and enjoy exploring the island freely again.

You did it right, Barbados is horrible at the moment.

You realise that posting things like that is approximately the equivalent of someone posting a video of some rabid anti-covid nutjob running up to people and coughing in their face, then asking you to defend it?

Way too many people here are far too interested in getting some virtual internet 'one over' on someone as opposed to actually partaking in any sort of sensible discussion.

Do you not realise the Irony when you LITERALLY replied to my post with a comment specifically designed to try and get one over on me? The bloody hypocrisy....!!

I went ‘shopping’ for the first time in almost two years today.

An eye test meant I found myself in the Bentall Centre, which is a reasonably large shopping centre in Kingston upon Thames.

Looking around I’d say mask wearing was at 10% in the communal part of the centre itself and in most of the shops I walked past, a bit higher in places like Boots.

I was fairly busy and there were far less empty shops than I expected there to be. It wasn’t as busy as it was when I used to go shopping more regularly 10 or so years ago, but that is probably more because of the rise of online shopping and because places like Westfield have displaced Kingston as destination shopping centre.

I cut through John Lewis on the way back home. Mask wearing perhaps 20% in there, but no signs or anything else that I noticed.

Truth hurts I guess. As I said you very rarely see 45, 50, 55 yr olds arguing incessantly on Twitter. All while complaining they aren't getting a fair salary or can't buy a home.

Educate yourself. Increase your earning potential.
Evidently they're too busy arguing incessantly on here instead.

Nicked from elsewhere:-

2300 years ago, long before Islam, Arabs discovered that forcing people to cover their nose and mouths, broke their will and individuality, and depersonalized them. It made them submissive. That's why they imposed on every woman the mandatory use of a fabric over her face.
Then Islam turned it into the woman's symbol of submission to Alah, the man owner of the Harem, and the King.
Modern psychology explains it: without face we don't exist as independent beings. The child looks in the mirror between the ages of two and three and is discovered as an independent being. The mask is the beginning of deleting individuality.
He who does not know his history is condemned to repeat it...

As long as we have the choice fair enough. If we’re told to wear masks that’s an issue for me.

Me too. I live just North of the Scotland/England border and I'm really pissed off when I'm forced to wear a mask at work or in a Scottish supermarket. I've been doing most of my shopping in England rather than Scotland lately, not because I hate wearing a mask, but because I hate being told to wear one. It's a subtle difference, but a big one for me.

And it was bks on there too. Pseudo intellectual bullst.

I'll be wearing a mask if I have any covid symptoms, otherwise no.

Posted further up the thread about my son testing positive, then my wife (fully vaccinated) tested positive. I've had some of the symptoms so although it's been the alotted ten days I'm wearing a mask whilst I still have a bit of a cough/cold.

Once I'm better no more masks.

Why is it 'perfectly reasonable' ?

on what grounds.

Comforting for the wearer or clinical effect on the population ?
A 15 year old with no underlying conditions died of Covid last week. Obviously that's not the norm, but you can't assume you or your loved ones wouldn't be seriously ill if they did become infected.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-hampshire-58...

There are still 30k - 40k cases a day.

I know a couple in their 30s who denied the need for restrictions, said life is full of risks and we need to get on as normal both caught Covid recently and both were seriously ill. She needed a caesarean to ease the pressure on her lungs and nearly lost her baby. She's now stuck living with her parents and is on oxygen support.

A small act to help avoid this kind of thing happening to people and reduce the spread of the virus seems perfectly reasonable.

It is absolutely fascinating the highly emotive insults that the mask lovers hurl about in order to try and discredit anyone who doesn't support their viewpoint. It's almost like a cult - attack the non believers!

Remarkable.
Given your claim above I wondered what your take was on these sort of comments.
