Supermarket shortages
Discussion
I wonder if there's a little panic psychology going on, ie people see an empty bit of shelf a buy "a bit more, just in case" and if a few people do that it doesn't take much to empty shelves the supermarket work on the basis of constant re-stoking.
Bit like when we had the fuel protests for several months after people would see a car or two waiting at a filling station and then passing drivers would panic and pile in.
Maybe they should have pictures of the stuff on the base and back of the shelf so the shelf doesn't look so spartan?
TLDR people are stoopid

Just back from a Tesco shop ...... nothing I could see regarding shortages and empty shelves.
Shelves well stocked in an NI Tescos today and according to my wife Lidl and Home Bargains also grand (she likes shopping, I do the bare minimum to ensure we get real food and not have to live off whatever was on offer). Obviously local butcher also fine.I'm chuckling at running low on beer. I reckon they'd have to get the military involved in "supply chain management" if that happened .
I did my weekly shop at Sainsbury's 2 days ago. Fresh and frozen all looked OK, but big gaps in chilled and ambient:
No 2 litre bottles of Coke/Pepsi. Not much in the whole soft drinks aisle at all.
No large pork pies.
Gaps in sliced/cooked meat and cheese
Around 50% of lines missing in the snack and savoury biscuit aisles
If anything, it was worse than last week

I know. It's for my wife. I feel like just filling up bottles from the tap to see if she notices.
Is it a woman thing? Me and the girlfriend went for food a couple of weeks ago, she ordered a tap water at some point during the meal.Yet she insists on having bottled water to drink at home.
It's the first time she's ordered water whilst out at a meal, so it actually made me think about it.

My Mrs is coeliac and we eat reduced carb so we order a fair bit of niche food which varies in quality a fair bit so you're always chasing the best pasta etc. A lot of stuffs been completely unobtainable since the start of this - whether that's down to import issues or manufacturers consolidating/focussing on core products or whatever, I don't know.No 2 litre bottles of Coke/Pepsi. There's always food in the shops and the day you think there won't be you'll be wanting to think about weapons rather than stocked cupboards.

But my dear Marie Antionette, what if they live in a flat? Or if they are doing more productive things with their time?
This is PH, we all have land and staff to manage it for us. I have staff who, in turn, have staff to manage it.
I will admit I don't have much but it is kind of nice to enjoy your own tomatoes

Got enough grapes on my backside as it is thanks very much.
Try to make unfunny comments like that again and you will find yourself on the list. However if you really do suffer from piles Home Bargains do an excellent pile cream at just £1

It's now been over a month since I've been able to get frozen green beans in any supermarket.
Went to Sainsbury's today and it's getting worse with no milk available at all (including the blue and red tops and the organic range), before it just seemed to be the bog standard green top semi skimmed which was in short supply.

which part of london is that? i only say that because all the asdas, LIDL and ALDI's in my area of greater east london has always been fully stocked. I go 2-3 times a week and i've never seen anyhing in short supply, and i've never seen an empty bunch of shelves such as that. managed to buy my BOB milk weekly. no issues

Earlier this month the boss of the UK’s biggest dairy supplier has said supermarkets could face a “summer of disruption” to milk deliveries if the Government does not act to address a shortage of lorry drivers.
Arla, which supplies milk to about 2,400 stores each day in the UK,said the company has struggled to deliver to 10 per cent of stores on a more regular basis in recent weeks.

We have similar problems. My wife is coeliac (and in the small % of coeliacs who cannot eat even "gluten free" oats), with soy allergy and lactose intolerance. My son is on a low fodmap diet. The combination gets a touch tricky At the start of this last year, we stockpiled heavily - just as well, as it turned out. So far this year we've resisted that, but its looking like we might need to resume.

I think quite a few did - if only briefly - consider that need last year...untakenname said:

Is this mainly a certain parts of London and other large metropolitan areas thing?Went to Sainsbury's today and it's getting worse with no milk available at all (including the blue and red tops and the organic range), before it just seemed to be the bog standard green top semi skimmed which was in short supply.
Because I bought frozen green beans last week, and milk, though admittedly most of our milk is delivered to the doorstep from local farm. Not London, thank God :shudder: but hicksville.

That is the benefit of not living in the city. We have milk delivered from a local dairy, we buy our veg from local farm shops and have meat delivered by a local butcher. Even the supermarket deliveries we have had seem to be as normal.Because I bought frozen green beans last week, and milk, though admittedly most of our milk is delivered to the doorstep from local farm. My partner works in food safety at Felixstowe port. They're seeing delays in shipments of cleared foods because of a lack of drivers. That'll push the wholesale costs of food up as they're having to pay additional storage charges at the port.

Supply issues out here in north east Essex too - shortages of bread and milk in several supermarkets. They're receiving deliveries, but smaller quantities than usual....
Not in my part of NE Essex...not had an issue with availability of anything apart from a neighbour still waiting Gentlemens Relish or Mushroom Ketchup since lockdown began (have explained "order it online" to no avail, so can't be that desperate).FiF said:

Bromley Sainsburys. The inner city smaller local/express store formats seem to be even more bare likely as they have a just in time model with multiple smaller deliveries throughout the day which from a logistics point of view makes less sense than larger store supply runs.
Home food delivery seems to be a joke as well with loads of bizarre substitutions.
