BBC News - Johnson will lead Tories at next election, says Brandon Lewis

I think that will seal the Tories fate. Starmer can keep doing what he's doing at the moment I.e. nothing.

Labour's election rhetoric will write itself.

I'll go for a 20-40 majority.
At the moment the average of polls show Labour just shy of a majority and a probable Labour/Libdem coalition.

A long time to go admittedly and polls are just a snapshot of the moment but something will have to change and pretty quick for the Tories to keep control.

Johnson is an absolute bellend but has managed to become mayor of London, become pm and keep his job despite being an odious piece of st. So why would he not think he can continue to lead the party. They backed him a few weeks back and he just needs to dial up the racism a bit to win enough votes in any general election.

My takeaway is that back in 2020 when this happened he was trying to get someone else to pay for a £150,000 treehouse for one of his own children whilst whipping his own MPs to vote against feeding other peoples children before caving in to Marcus Rashford.
This man, and the sycophants that surround him, should never have been anywhere near power.
I'm struggling with why anyone would pay £150,000 for a present for another person's child unless they thought they were going to get more than £150,000 of value back out of it?

Well at least the proposal wasn’t to be funded by the tax payer. Indicates Boris has every intention of staying in Number 10, and I suspect that the treehouse is handy propaganda to aid that process.
laugh Yeah nothing says dictatorship like a £150,000 playhouse during a cost-of-living/housing/inflation crisis laugh
Like the 4-year-old story about Carrie Symonds, this latest one (if true) about a playhouse is from Autumn 2020, perhaps you were struggling back then, but I don't think the UK was struggling back then in the same way as it is right now.

I guess you missed the part of the article stating it apparently occurred back in 2020.

Whose dead cat is this I wonder, I mean, all concurrent political stories are dead cats right...right?

Same reason people who donate £2M to the party to end up on its advisory board.

Bit awkward when their husband used to work for Putin but hey it's all money.

My main takeaway is that this was just another example of Boris having zero clue about the value of money or how to control his spending. Whether it's his personal cash or public funds he just has zero clue. I honestly think he must be innumerate.

The 3 term thing is just his usual disconnection from reality, and blind faith that blundering through will get him whatever he wants. Mostly because so far in his life doing whatever he likes has mostly worked, if he ignores the frequent expensive stumbles that have slowed but not deflected him.

£150k for a treehouse? ffs, this guy's our PM! He just hasn't got a clue! Anybody with any 'magic beans' or a bridge for sale, get in there now!

You don't need a bridge. You just need an idea for a bridge and he'll give you tens millions of pounds of our money to piss up the wall.

That can't be true, Boris isn't from wealth, he's from a hard working class family and only attended Eton off the back of scholarships. Or at least that's the family narrative. Even his supposedly more sensible sister has tried that line on national TV.

I'm building a tree house / castle for my two girls at the moment out of old pallets, fences and some two by four from wickes.
Spent about £200 so far, including a lot of nails, and I'm nearly ready for the second floor to be done.

I could do with 150 grand though, if someone wants to give it to me.

I won't date a woman named after a football team - bound to be a nutter.

Although to be fair, given how many kids he's probably got the tree house must have to be massive.

Though most people would pause a bit before thinking about paying a number equivalent to their annual salary on a treehouse for a toddler at a house they don't even own. Even if someone else was funding it you'd maybe thing it was a bit much.

It's not like Boris was ever exactly rolling in cash or comes from mega wealth, so his ideas about money shouldn't be that distorted. So I come back to him probably not understanding numbers or money on a functional level.

Thing is if he was going to bung cash at building something that expensive I'd expect him to start with a little pied-à-terre where he could enjoy himself away from the current wife.

Boris is one of those people who simply doesn’t think about money.

I think it’s almost that he believes such trivialities of money are beneath him.

How much is it? and Who will pay? - well they’re just minor details…the minions can sort that. He doesn’t need to waste his time on such minor things.

Of course, that approach also works quite well if your finances are completely chaotic and you need/want others to pay.

I suspect the opposite is true. He’s been brought up amidst some very rich contemporaries who possibly have that mindset. He, however, is I think painfully aware that he is not so fortunate and has spent his life finding other ways to maintain his position within his particular circle of friends.

The greatest service a rich billionaire could do for the country right now is dangle a juicy sinecure/carrot in front of Boris (7 figures) and he’d be out of 10 Downing St so fast the press pack outside wouldn’t have time to react.

You are both right.

If you read the really interesting Cummings interview a few weeks ago, he details exactly this issue. Boris is always skint, always trying to maintain a certain lifestyle, and always expecting others to pay.

One of the more notable incidents was Carrie organising the Downing Street flat redecoration where he apparently got extremely vocal and worked up over the fact that "She's up there right now with an interior designer spending a fortune on gold wallpaper and other crap. It's going to cost £100k and I haven't got that sort of money"

He then instructed his advisors and assistants to 'find someone else to pay for it' such as a donor or other wealthy individual who no doubt wanted something political in return. He was apparently advised that this would be illegal and unethical, but told them to get on with it anyway. The friendly donor was Lord Brownlow’s company, Huntswood Associates Ltd.
