Boris is one of those people who simply doesn’t think about money.
I think it’s almost that he believes such trivialities of money are beneath him.
How much is it? and Who will pay? - well they’re just minor details…the minions can sort that. He doesn’t need to waste his time on such minor things.
Of course, that approach also works quite well if your finances are completely chaotic and you need/want others to pay.
I suspect the opposite is true. He’s been brought up amidst some very rich contemporaries who possibly have that mindset. He, however, is I think painfully aware that he is not so fortunate and has spent his life finding other ways to maintain his position within his particular circle of friends. I think it’s almost that he believes such trivialities of money are beneath him.

The greatest service a rich billionaire could do for the country right now is dangle a juicy sinecure/carrot in front of Boris (7 figures) and he’d be out of 10 Downing St so fast the press pack outside wouldn’t have time to react.
If you read the really interesting Cummings interview a few weeks ago, he details exactly this issue. Boris is always skint, always trying to maintain a certain lifestyle, and always expecting others to pay.
One of the more notable incidents was Carrie organising the Downing Street flat redecoration where he apparently got extremely vocal and worked up over the fact that "She's up there right now with an interior designer spending a fortune on gold wallpaper and other crap. It's going to cost £100k and I haven't got that sort of money"
He then instructed his advisors and assistants to 'find someone else to pay for it' such as a donor or other wealthy individual who no doubt wanted something political in return. He was apparently advised that this would be illegal and unethical, but told them to get on with it anyway. The friendly donor was Lord Brownlow’s company, Huntswood Associates Ltd.
- Boris doesn’t think about money
- Boris hates having to think about money
I get the sense that Boris is the kind of person who doesn’t know how much stuff costs, and frankly doesn’t care. He only thinks about that stuff when he has to (like when his wife is spending £100k he doesn’t have)
He himself is not out to “get rich” - he’s not that interested in material things or impressing rich friends with displays of wealth (FFS as Foreign Sec he was driving a Citroen AX and a Toyota Previa).
He is far more interested in being Prime Minister than being stupendously wealthy. If he’s out to impress anyone (which I doubt he is, actually), it’s by winning and being powerful.
At the same time
a) It sounds like his wife does have a taste for the finer things in life
b) He sees a certain lifestyle as in line with his status as the biggest of the big dogs…the details of how it’s funded are an annoying triviality that he’d rather not engage with (especially when he’s skint)
In his mind it’ll be far easier just to ignore and attempt to outsource that problem to someone else rather than say no to the wife or engage in the messy detail of his own finances.
The reality of course is that he will make huge amounts of money after leaving office. It wouldn’t surprise me if he beats all previous records for speaker fees, then there’ll be book deals, plus undoubtedly some ‘advisory posts’ with mildly dodgy foreign companies.
Trouble is if you’re a bank there’s no way you’d lend against his future financial success, because you know
- He has absolutely no interest in leaving office to make $$$
- His finances are completely chaotic and you’ll find the money has gone straight back out his account before he’s repaid his debts to you
Two classics (if you are into Tory feet being held to the fire)
1. Liz Truss (future PM?) explains her role of bringing up human rights issues in the gulf States

2. Simon Case being grilled by John Mcdonald about the Carrie Home Office job

Both of these are brilliant. Much better than parliament

I see the disappearing Times story has been discussed in Private Eye this week but with an extra piece of titillation regarding an MP walking in on BJ getting a BJ from his then mistress.
